Jan -- yes documents with conflicting information not uncommon.
First try to see if maybe a transcribed error or maybe duplicate created later.
Had original 1819 document with baptism 27/03/1819 yet on copy 1910 baptism 04/03/1819 . I wpuld choose original document.
Names do vary often on different documents , baptisms ,marriages or DN's as well.
Often extra names or different spelling as well.

Why I believe the originals always better than any transcribed document.
Basic common sense must also prevail like 5 year old mothers or dead mothers having children.

Margarite -- what you are saying right.
Think too often too much reliance on curators to deal with problems. Solving one problem creates another one
A double edged sword.

We need to figure out what, specifically, is being objected to here, Phillip:

*1.MP Profiles that are locked down completely? Those should be pretty rare and left over from the days before Curators could lock specific Data Fields or Relationships. We used to do that to avoid repeated mismerges.

Only solution there is to get that Curator or another one to unlock the whole profile, and re-lock the specific Data Fields and Relationships according to primary documentary sources. As this is just a leftover from years ago, it shouldn't be difficult to do.

  • 2.MP Profiles where a Curator has locked specific fields which documentation actually proves to be wrong?
  • 3.MP profiles that are not field locked, but that you don't have access to change fields on yourself because you're a free user?

Summary -

Only a curator can merge a fully locked profile.

Anyone with manager / collaborating rights can merge a relationship locked profile, field locked profile, or unlocked MP.

Editing to correct errors in locked profiles or fields can only be done by a curator

So requesting to collaborate or be added as a manager can help in some cases - the locked fields etc. are still problematic if the curator involved doesn't respond. I can only suggest that you try contacting another curator or contact Customer services if you still get nowhere. I am happy to help if I can.

Sharon -- Francois PJ Griesel here on discussion all fields on his profile we were locked similar with most siblings and his parents. ( June changed on his profile )

One gets to profile with improved information and sources then suddenly everthing blocked ,name, d.o.b. place of birth.
Everything

Very frustrating

Maybe curators must just confirm info first before they block those fields.

Requesting management ?
About 50 requests I deleted last week some 5 months later.

So it's 2.MP Profiles where a Curator has locked specific fields which documentation actually proves to be wrong?

Is this happening often? Is it part of your excellent campaign for accuracy of chronologically accurate place names? If so, how long do you think is fair for a Curator to have time to respond and unlock. A week or two?

...respond to a private messaged request to unlock that field

Other users in this Discussion, can you post links here to the profiles you're having problems with > so we can figure out solutions that help everyone?

2 weeks to reply reasonable.
Maybe rather not lock a field even on a MP when not confirmed by a primary source.
GENI a collaborative effort after all.
Also see Jan Vorster 's comment re place names on this discussion.

Any information not confirmed on any profile rather leave blank and not locked

RE> Maybe rather not lock a field even on a MP when not confirmed by a primary source.

I completely agree with you. I'm happy to try to get all the SA Curators to endorse this as well.

Thx Sharon

Is there a Project or discussion page where one could post these problematic profiles so any curator available could help?

Sounds like a good plan to me. I respond to messages daily if not in a couple of days unless I am away (which very seldom happens). Usually keeps me busy for the first half of the day.

Phillip - setting up a discussion page is something we have discussed - will open it up and post link here.

What would the question be that wouldn't create a Discussion that would be quickly overwhelmed by personal preference disputes?

Curators, please unlock a documentably incorrect field? (A bit clumsy?)

I called it Curators - SA please unlock these fields for editing.

On Jan Voster's comment: IF EVERYBODY AGREES TO USING PLACE NAMES AS THEY WERE AT THE TIME OF THE EVENT THEN NOTHING NEEDS TO BE LOCKED. This is common logic.

This is the SA standard > but not enforceable. Different areas of the world tree on geni adopt different standards > many using the modern place.

Locking fields on historical profiles is the only way to ensure they remain what 'we' have agreed on amongst SA users.

Thanks June.

Thank you June
Wonderful to have this

m following the discussiona and wii add my specific problems if I see results from the "Locked and wrong"

I am not a "seasoned" contributor. I find reading your discussions helpful.
At some places I have found that you are "forced" by the program to choose between some place names and you would like to use something else. I suppose then you rather leave the information out. I have used "notes' to describe the dilemma in the profiles so that someone with more skill can correct it later....

Adriaan, you can choose to edit the location fields by hand - if you open them up and ignore the GEni automated suggestions that are often laughable when it comes to SA. That's the way to do it.

Thanks Sharon. I will keep on trying so.

I do exactly that -- as I do not know A GREAT many of the people added to this Family tree THEREFORE I may look through the the tree out of interest & to see or find my/our immediate family and add details eg deaths births or photos but I hasten to say I never tamper with profiles as I do not know where different FAMILIES & PEOPLE FIT IN.
ITS GREAT TO HAVE ALL YOU WONDERFUL PEOPLE ON THIS TREE BUT PLEASE don`t ask me to edit ANY personal profile

Jan Hendrik Vorster :---
I agree with you by changing Names of Places as the were at the time of an event can be confusing as some names have been changed more than once eg some places names have been changed this year of 2021
sincerely Wendy

What to do -locked and wrong but no Curator anywhere on profile

It's definitely not locked, Phillip. It may be that you don't collaborate with any of the managers?

Could not change /correct her parents .
June working on it was locked at Frans Vilonel
My stupidity should have checked tree / thread first .

I learned that often a field is locked on Parents profile have to go there and send message rather .

There may have been a tree conflict on the parents that you can't correct as a free user. Additionally, restrictions around profiles still living in the past 150 years often kick in.

My pet hates are:-
1. Not using name of place at time of an event e.g. I was born in Warmbaths not Bela Bela
2. People who have been long dead should not be marked private
3. Would love to know who decides how a name is spelt if different from e.g. first source document
