I have the same problem with 18th century ancestors with modern day place names for events. Then I can;t correct it because locked and curator does not reply to messages.
IF EVERYBODY AGREES TO USING PLACE NAMES AS THEY WERE AT THE TIME OF THE EVENT THEN NOTHING NEEDS TO BE LOCKED. This is common logic.
So many errors are generated through merges. If things are wrong on a locked profile send the curator a message letting them know. Also - anyone who has a profile with sourced, correct information which is likely to be changed because of multi users etc contact a curator and ask them to lock fields. In defence of curators - we are volunteers! We work on thousands of trees and have busy lives - we often go beyond the call of duty to research lines that have no connection to us. We try! If the curator of a locked profile doesn't respond contact another who works in that country - any curator can unlock/lock etc.

Just adds to confusion !!
Reminds me of that Victorian Toilet cartoon ---
I no longer accept or merger details. I look at the information sent check out on my own and if I find it correct then add it to my private site on my own computer. To many people just accept anything they see if they want it to fit. I am always willing to look at info but no longer add to public trees.

I do agree that this is a problem! There is information about names that are also incorrect, that have previously been loaded by other people, often with less knowledge about the family, and it is not possible to correct these errors, even if one has documentary evidence to the contrary! Could there not be a means of challenging such errors, if one has proof?

Get excuse 7 out of my box of MY opinions.
Accuse Phillip yet again of being hostile and it's all resolved.
Getting a bit tired of that feeble attempt to ignore what is being said here. Just immature reasoning by someone obviously very insecure.
Rather focus on the issue here than just trying to fall back on excuses and playing the victim.
Everyone try hard on Geni and gets frustrated when their attempts to add and correct information is just thwarted . Brushed aside by some that believe they can call others hostile and their OPINIONS are the final say.
I do agree. Once a profile is locked, then mistakes cannot be rectified.
Another problem is the profiles that are made "Private".
This not only applies to members of a family that had already passed away years ago, but also of family members that is still alive.
I can understand if a living family member does not want to display his/her date of birth, but what is the aim of a Family Tree if everybody's information is set to "Private"
Phillipp is correct to bring up this problem. It needs to be addressed because a lot of frustration is caused when a profile cannot be corrected because it is locked. Could Curators be a little more "user friendly" regarding locked profiles.
Curators perform a vital function and I am sure that they also get very frustrated when having to correct the same errors over and over again. They are volunteers.
A "Caveat" on documents. I have many examples of different documents referring to the same person, with different spellings.
I apologise for the above, I agree to what Jan Neelmeyer has written. I want to know if there is a possibility for GENI to appoint curators that are equipped ( experience / knowledgeable) with the correct information at hand, to fix it. But there must be some seal, that any "other" person cannot change it or overwrite it.
