Yes index only info as on document but when one can see it is says Johannesburg and the it was indexed as Jollanysberg .
SAW today Robertson , Cape indexed as Robertson , Australia .
Heidelberg , Cape as Heidelberg , Germany
And born 'at the Cape , good Hope ' as Cape Cod

To make the task easier for finding the names and changes to cities. towns, and municipalities, one could refer to SALGA - the SA Local Government Association - that should have all this information.

Thank you for the question Phillip, indeed a valid one. I see that several people have already provided the answers so there is no need to duplicate that. Thank yo

Yes, Bloemfontein remains unchanged, was in the Orange Free State which is now called Free State since 1994.

David - a link to SALGA ?
Jenny - when did Leliefontein become Bloemfontein ? Even the Free State have had a few name variants as well , possible to have been born in the Orange River Colony, married in The Orange Free State, Union of South Africa and died in the Free Sate , South Africa

@Phillip
A good reference book for this type of questions is Die Geskiedenis Atlas vir Suid-Afrika by AJ Boeseken published by Nasionale Boekhandel Bpk. I bought it ±in 1961. It probable is not available any more. On page 56 and 57 is detailed maps of the districts During the VOC and British governing periods, and later too probable until the 1950's.
I have found that if a person was born or died in a certain district you cannot accept that it is the same district that we know today by that name. You must always take the historical period in consideration.

Rina

Spot on Rina .
I have discovered the same ,boundaries changed.

Blouberg, Limpopo
Middelburg?

South Africa became a Democracy from April 1994. The four provinces were split to become nine.
SALGA will be able to help you with each and every point.
Don't forget 1994, name changes to most everything. This is still happening

One Problem SALGA - the number you have dialled is unavailable at present -- or --- you are number 4678945 in the queue .
By that time one could have walked to the place in the past and got the info.
Website ?
Seems more info about themselves and whom died when being remembered than anything else .

Did a trail run with SALGA this morning !!
Jesus wept !!
David S and David P you are welcome to be the martyrs to deal with SALGA. Maybe you will have more success . I find that the one consistancy from before 1994 : Bureaucracy never reallly change.

today on familysearch FYI --I corrected it to this

McGregor, Robertson, Cape Province, South Africa
Was indexed as

[Grahamstown, Albany, Cape Province, South Africa]

That was nowhere to be found on the actual document

also found
Arthur George Shortt indexed by someone as born in George , Cape of good hope 1790 but the only George on the document was his name George.
In 1790 would have been District of Swellendam .
George was only established 23 April 1811 !! George also appear often as George , Cape Town ??? . Here on GENI and other sites .
Why / Very far from Cape Town ?

Thx Maria -- now to remember No-one was born in Polokwane , Limpopo in 1919 .
Also born 1963 in Lyttleton , married 1983 in Verwoerdburg and died 2018 in Centurion

FYI
Cape Province pre 1994 became part of 5 NEW provinces after 1994 not just 3 new provinces.

East Cape ?
Where would that be ?

For those with Scottish ancestors : Scotland only became part of the UK in 1801!
No United Kingdom existed before 1801 .

Denys Patrick BothaHi Denys Patrick Botha, to save a current word document as a pdf file you go File->Save As-> and then on the second row where the file name is, you press the down arrow. It will give you a whole lot of formats which you can choose from. Click the pdf option and it will save an extra copy, it won't alter your word document which you can still work on and edit. The next time you want to save it as a pdf you just do the same thing but replace the existing file or put a version number at the end of it. Hope this helps.

Dear Jenny.
You are a star, thank you for detailed account of how to save a document as a PDF. I had thought of your instructions but was very unsure whether my original document would still be editable.
However, once I have the PDF saved copy, I am at a loss of how or where to post it on Geni. Please advise.
Thanks again.

Denys Patrick BothaHi Denys, it's only a pleasure. I've included two links here, one is to upload a document to a project.

https://help.geni.com/hc/en-us/articles/229705967-How-do-I-add-docu...

The other is how to make your document useful.

Since Nelson Mandela became Presadent -[1994] of South Africa lots has changes
South Africa is under the ANC rule [African National Congress]

CHANGING IF TOWNS & CITY NAMES Eg Port Elizabeth now Named Gqeberhe
Grahamstown now Makhanda /Queenstown now Komani

Apartheid--[segragation ]ended1994

2021 -Our Presadent at the presant time is Cyril Ramaphosa

1]Povity is high & lots of unskilled people

2]Many many have lost their jobs due to Covid Pandemic

3] On going Power outages

4] Lack of Schools for --those who are unable to pay the higher costs for schooling

A great deal of what has been found out I see above is correct
but fact are difficult to find due to disruptions that we have here
will follow up again soon ....... Regards Wendy bell

Whatever the political situation -.
Whether I think it is better or worse irrelevant .
We use place names as they were or are at the time of the event.
I can add :
Dwight D Eisenhower said : If you wart total security go to prison .There you are fed , clothed , given medical care and so on . The only thing lacking is freedom .
My own family lost their employment and full rights 1948 when the National Party came to rule South Africa ---- 1948 Nat rule
1.no decent employment
2.no decent schools .
3.no decent housing
4.no decent Electricity

Good Morning --- ,Phillipp As we speak today there is still changes being made & going by the above list from the Link is correct

how ever town of George is near Cape Town

Lyttleton , Verwoerdburg and Centurion are part of Pretoria

Lyttleton = Verwoerdburg = Centurion the same place with different names at different times .

A very good example .

--not part of Pretoria ( or maybe Tshwane ?? ) at the same time but consequently .

As in 1948 Chaos with name changes that were all just political expediency .

When do the names change again ?

George 429 Km from Cape Town --- would not really say it was near Cape Town .

J P Weyers you're right, George is not 'near' Cape Town. It is on the Garden Route. Cape Town, up until the Overberg mountains has a different climate to the rest of the country. We have winter rainfall whereas the rest have summer rainfall, as well as other little differences.

George and Knysna.
Wonderfull article in Researchgate.net about the destruction of the established Griekwa and KhieKhoe christian communities there and in Eastern Orange Free State by the " white " more recent farners in those areas late 1709's early 1800' .
Similar happened in the former Bechuanaland and Western Transvaal . Koranna and Griekwa farms just taken away and names of places changed .
Goringhaikona should be the name.
However for historical genealogy other names should still be used for appropriate time.
Setting it all up for correcting it all again after 1994

Like Schweizer Reneke is now back to it's original name before 1885
MAMUSA .
The whole area stolen from the real owners in 1885

Hi , as you say Its advisable to keep the old & original names of places--- Countries ,Cities, towns & streets as it will be easier to find people & Places & events together
Jenny Calder- you are most likely right although I live in the Eastern Cape all my life (77yrs)have only been there once --Christmas 2020 ----a beautiful place

Looking for names of places in former East Prussia is nearly impossible even online .
We must be careful that does not happen in SA .
Saw today on Wikipedia a place in SA where the name before 1900 is just not mentioned , not right ..
