@Phillip
A good reference book for this type of questions is Die Geskiedenis Atlas vir Suid-Afrika by AJ Boeseken published by Nasionale Boekhandel Bpk. I bought it ±in 1961. It probable is not available any more. On page 56 and 57 is detailed maps of the districts During the VOC and British governing periods, and later too probable until the 1950's.
I have found that if a person was born or died in a certain district you cannot accept that it is the same district that we know today by that name. You must always take the historical period in consideration.

Arthur George Shortt indexed by someone as born in George , Cape of good hope 1790 but the only George on the document was his name George.
In 1790 would have been District of Swellendam .
George was only established 23 April 1811 !! George also appear often as George , Cape Town ??? . Here on GENI and other sites .
Why / Very far from Cape Town ?
Mabe this will also help a little

Denys Patrick BothaHi Denys Patrick Botha, to save a current word document as a pdf file you go File->Save As-> and then on the second row where the file name is, you press the down arrow. It will give you a whole lot of formats which you can choose from. Click the pdf option and it will save an extra copy, it won't alter your word document which you can still work on and edit. The next time you want to save it as a pdf you just do the same thing but replace the existing file or put a version number at the end of it. Hope this helps.
Dear Jenny.
You are a star, thank you for detailed account of how to save a document as a PDF. I had thought of your instructions but was very unsure whether my original document would still be editable.
However, once I have the PDF saved copy, I am at a loss of how or where to post it on Geni. Please advise.
Thanks again.
Denys Patrick BothaHi Denys, it's only a pleasure. I've included two links here, one is to upload a document to a project.

The other is how to make your document useful.

Grahamstown now Makhanda /Queenstown now Komani
Apartheid--[segragation ]ended1994
2021 -Our Presadent at the presant time is Cyril Ramaphosa
1]Povity is high & lots of unskilled people
2]Many many have lost their jobs due to Covid Pandemic
3] On going Power outages
4] Lack of Schools for --those who are unable to pay the higher costs for schooling

Whatever the political situation -.
Whether I think it is better or worse irrelevant .
We use place names as they were or are at the time of the event.
I can add :
Dwight D Eisenhower said : If you wart total security go to prison .There you are fed , clothed , given medical care and so on . The only thing lacking is freedom .
My own family lost their employment and full rights 1948 when the National Party came to rule South Africa ---- 1948 Nat rule
1.no decent employment
2.no decent schools .
3.no decent housing
4.no decent Electricity
Lyttleton = Verwoerdburg = Centurion the same place with different names at different times .
A very good example .
--not part of Pretoria ( or maybe Tshwane ?? ) at the same time but consequently .
As in 1948 Chaos with name changes that were all just political expediency .
When do the names change again ?
George and Knysna.
Wonderfull article in Researchgate.net about the destruction of the established Griekwa and KhieKhoe christian communities there and in Eastern Orange Free State by the " white " more recent farners in those areas late 1709's early 1800' .
Similar happened in the former Bechuanaland and Western Transvaal . Koranna and Griekwa farms just taken away and names of places changed .
Goringhaikona should be the name.
However for historical genealogy other names should still be used for appropriate time.
Setting it all up for correcting it all again after 1994
Hi , as you say Its advisable to keep the old & original names of places--- Countries ,Cities, towns & streets as it will be easier to find people & Places & events together
Jenny Calder- you are most likely right although I live in the Eastern Cape all my life (77yrs)have only been there once --Christmas 2020 ----a beautiful place
