The Scarburgh/Scarborough family originated in northeastern Yorkshire, in and around Scarborough (as in "Scarborough Fair", which was held there for some 500 years). From there one branch moved down to North Walsham, Norfolk, in the latter part of the 14th century, and prospered there, eventually becoming the ancestors of the Accomack/Northampton, VA Scarburghs and possibly others.
Other branches diversified throughout the kingdom, and there were probably some unrelated families who took their name from the same place.
