About Sir Roland Penrose, CBE
Sir Roland Penrose left England after University (1922) to study painting in Paris under post-impressionist artists: he was much influenced by Max Ernst, Man Ray, Braque and others and later embraced Surrealism staging exhibitions of his own works. He was founder Chairman of the Institute of Contemporary Art (1947) and a Trustee of the Tate Gallery. He organized exhibitions of his friend Pablo Picasso's works and wrote a comprehensive biography of Picasso. His second wife was Lee Miller, the successful "Vogue" model and war correspondent and photographer, whom Roland met in Paris. Their son Antony Penrose has written her biography.
