About Sir John Gordon, 1st Baronet of Haddo

Biographical Summary

"Sir John Gordon, of Haddo, only son and heir of George Gordon, by Margaret, daughter of Sir Alexander Bannerman, of Elsick, which George (who died v.p. October 1610) was 1st son and heir apparent of James Gordon, of Methlic and Haddo, was born early in 1610); succeeded his grandfather in November 1624; was next in command of the Royal forces to oppose the Covenanters, and was in the action of Turreff in 1639. He joined the King at Newark, and was by him created a Baronet [S], 13 August 1642, with remainder to his heirs male of his body. In October 1643 he protested against the Covenant; was beseiged in his house at Kelly, and taken prisoner at its surrender, 8 May 1644; was found guilty of treason, and accordingly beheaded at Edinburgh, 19 July following, aged 34. He married in 1630, Mary, daughter of William Forbes of Tolquhoun. She survived him."
