About Roger II de Laon, comte de Laon (926-931)

The Vexin House as a lineage, appeared at the end of the ix th  century, from the Count Raoul I st of Vexin . He died in 1080. The origin of this family is not known, but probably of high lineage, since the mother of the first known member would be a descendant of Louis the Pious .

The first count, Raoul I er is the son of a Heilwis, or Helvide, who remarries in second marriage to the count Roger I er of Laon . This Heilwis is traditionally identified with Heilwis of Frioul, daughter of Eberhard , Marquis of Frioul and of the Carolingian Gisèle . But this identification poses a chronological problem, because born before 850, she would have had at least two children from 895 , which is unlikely.

Another hypothesis has been put forward: Helwis, wife of Roger de Laon, would be the daughter of Hucbald de Gouy and Heilwis de Frioul. Her first husband would be Gautier de Laon , which would explain the appearance of the first name of Gautier among the counts of Vexin.

It is this hypothesis that was used in the reconstruction of this branch of the House of Vexin on Geni. The basis of this reconstruction is onomastics, which is “the study of the history and origin of proper names, especially personal names.” Leading experts Katherine Keats-Rohan and Christian Settipani et. al. have contributed both to this new aspect of genealogical study but also through their studies specifically to this part of “the big tree”. Biography Edit

As soon as his father died in 926 , Count Herbert II de Vermandois claimed the county of Laon for his son. King Raoul refuses and invests Roger II of the county of Laon. But in 928 , Raoul had to cede Laon to Herbert, who built a citadel there [ 2 ] (this building, identified with Château Gaillot, was destroyed in 1411 by the Duke of Burgundy, Jean sans Peur ). Roger II, injured by his county, fights Herbert, who has his castle of Mortagne razed to the ground .

In 931 , Hugues le Grand , duke of the Franks , took over the city of Laon from Herbert who however remained master of his citadel until 938 . Hugues also seizes the county of Douai belonging to Ernaud, a vassal of Herbert, and gives it [ 3 ] to Roger II in compensation for the loss of Laon. King Raoul keeps and attaches Laon, which becomes a symbol of royal power.

In 941 , Roger II received the county of Bassigny by marrying the daughter of Count Gozelon (or Josselin) de Bassigny, he had a son:

Hugh (†25 Aug 961), Count of Bassigny , buried in Saint-Remi de Reims. Other studies [ref. necessary] give him as wife the daughter of Hugues de Chaumontois , whom he would have married around 937. She would be a sister of Odelric (Odalric, Odolric), archbishop of Reims . From this union would be born:

Helvise possible wife Hugues Blois and [ 4 ] [Insufficient source] (to 971) of Hilduin Montdidier (or I st of Ramerupt ) [ 5 ] Roger III of Porcien
