About Rfn. Robert Joseph Nolan
Robert Nolan was born at Wellington in New Zealand's North Island on 10 February 1893 (reg. 1893/899). Joseph was added later as a middle name and his nickname became 'Podge'. His parents were Bartholomew Nolan and Margaret Nolan (née Scanlon) who had married in New Zealand in 1889 (reg. 1889/1447). Robert worked as a driver. During World War I he served with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 1st Battalion (Service No. WWI 71253). Robert was wounded in action at Étaples in France on 5 October 1918. A gunshot wound to his back penetrated his abdomen. 25-year-old Robert died of his wounds at 12.30am at the No. 7 Canadian General Hospital on 19 October 1918. He was buried in the Étaples Military Cemetery [LXVIII. J. 11]. Bio by Debbie McCauley (8 October 2024).
