Mary 'Ann' Proctor

Mary "Ann" Bennett was in Surry County, Virginia and died 9 September 1778 Edgecombe County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of James Bennett of Brunswick County, named 2nd as Mary Proctor in his 1751 will.

Birth

Birth records do not exist. She is estimated as born 1712/1713 in Surry County, Virginia. However, if she was the mother of the younger children (Molly b. 1769, Edith (again) b. 1761) that's too early. Her first child was born by 1746. Therefore her birth could have been as early as 1712 or as late as 1730.

If we accept the traditional birth date, she was not Mary Roger's daughter.

Mother

James Bennett (1691-1751) married Mary Rogers, daughter of William Rogers and Elizabeth Cartwright. Mary Rogers is probably not the first wife of James, as she is too young to be mother to his eldest two sons. Also, James is twelve years her senior. Mary is listed as Mary "Bennit" in her father's will in 1727, Surrey County, Virginia, so that helps establish the date of their marriage as before 1727.

We set that marriage to between 1717-1727 and placed children born before 1717 to the postulated unknown first wife., including Mary (Bennett) Proctor.

Death

Her death is seen as 9 September 1778.

John 'Grey' Proctor named his wife "Ann" in his 1771 will. Was Ann a second wife, or a second name for Mary Bennett? There was an Ann Proctor in the 1790 census in Edgecombe County.

Will of John Proctor

Will dated Dec. 21, 1761, probated February Court 1772 Edgecombe County, North Carolina.

• Gives manor plantation to Ann, makes her Extx. Plantation
• plus additional 200 acres to son Moses.
• John (Jr) gets the land adjoining Jesse Flowers and Arthur Williams.
• Shadrack gets 175 acres adjoining John Jr's.
• Aaron gets 100 acres "where Jacob Brake lived", t
• he other half of the 200 acre Brake tract going to Samson.
• One daughter mentioned, Patience Jones, who gets 5 shillings sterling.
• Exr: John Morris, witnesses: Mary Morris, Deberiah Mate.

Origins

James Bennett made his Will on November 11, 1751 and the same was probated March 1, 1752 as follows:

• "To my son Benjamin Bennett all land lying between Honey Bottom and the upper line.
• To my children James Bennet, Mary Proctor, Frances Simms, Priscilla Dugger and Joseph Bennett, one shilling each.
• To my son Reuben Bennett all the lower part from said Honey Bottom and plantation;
• to my dau. Brambley Bennett, bible and furniture, etc.
• to wife Mary rest of estate, seh and son Reuben to be executors. Teste, John Dugger, John Ducke and Edward Parrish."
