Biography
Henry Stevens was born about 1611. We know this because he was deposed on April 1, 1673 that he was "aged 60 or thereabouts."
He migrated in 1635 on July 2, 1635; but on a different vessel from his wife. "Alice Steevens" enrolled aged 22 at London as a passenger on the Abigail whereas Henry was on the Defence. Henry had married Alice (_____) that same year in 1635.
Between the years of 1635 and 1640, Henry and his family resided in Lynn where he was the servant of John Humfrey. In July 1640 John Winthrop reported that Humfrey's servants had fired his barn and consumed all his corn and hay that had a value of L160; the court gave him L250. "Henry Stephens" on December 1, 1640, was ordered to be servant to Mr. Humfrey for 21 years from this day for "firing the barn of his master." Anderson in his "Great Migration" says, this may seem to be a different person, however "Men of the wealth and status of John Humfrey...frequently had servants who were themselves of substantial status and wealth, who might be married with children." Also, less than a year after Henry's servitude was prolonged and only 3 months before Henry Stevens appeared in Boston, John Humfrey left New England permanently; thus freeing Henry and his family to move to Boston. The first record was when Henry Stevens was granted "a great lot" at Mount Wollaston, alias Brayntry, for five heads on July 26, 1641. On November 1644, Thomas Grubb, Nathaniel Woodward, and Robert Reinolds, all of Boston, granted several acres of land at Muddy River to Henry Stevens.
Henry was a mason (a builder and worker with stone) and also a husbandman farmer. He was admitted into the Boston church on February 8, 1651; with his first wife, Alice being admitted on June 18, 1643.
He became a freeman 25 May 1652.[1]
Henry and Alice had the following children:
John Stevens who was born September 10, 1637 and baptized on June 18, 1643 at Boston. He married on December 15, 1644 to Elizabeth Hildreth, daughter of Richard Hildreth.
James Stevens was born April 10, 1640 and baptized June 18, 1643 at Boston. He married Sarah Smith, the daughter of John Smith, at Hingham on March 14, 1663/4.
Joseph Stevens was born September 1, 1642 and baptized on June 18, 1643 at Boston. He married Sarah Thayer at Mendon on July 2, 1671. Joseph died at Braintree on June 19, 1677.
Deborah Stevens was born April 25, 1645 and baptized April 27, 1645 at Boston. Married by 1667 to Thomas Wedge #Deliverance Stevens, a daughter was baptized on April 15, 1649 at Boston. She married Henry Dewing.
Henry was Boston constable for Rumny Marsh and Muddy River on March 10, 1655
Henry married again by 1651 to Mary Buckmaster, daughter of Thomas Buckmaster of Boston. Mary was admitted into the Boston church on February 15, 1651/2.
Henry and his 2nd wife, Mary (Buckmaster), had the following children:
Joanna Stevens was born on May 28, 1652 and baptized August 14, 1653 at Boston. She married by 1674 to John Winchester, son of John Winchester.
Henry Stevens was born on July 20, 1656 and baptized on July 27, 1656 at Boston.
Thomas Stevens was born May 20, 1658 and baptized July 11, 1658 at Boston.
Joshua Stevens was born May 15, 1659 and baptized June 26, 1659 at Boston. He died November 10, 1659 at Boston.
John Stevens was born May 25, 1663 (baptized as "Henry") and baptized on July 19, 1663 at Boston.
Samuel Stevens was born September 24, 1665 at Boston and baptized at Roxbury on April 14, 1667.
Silence Stevens was born July 26, 1668 at Boston and baptized at Roxbury on August 2, 1668. Died or buried at Roxbury on February 1, 1668/9.
Mary Stevens was baptized at Roxbury on May 15, 1670. She married John Woodee by 1687. Their oldest child was born at Boston on July 19, 1687.
Roxbury records of some of the baptisms were from when the family resided at Muddy River, which was part of Boston, but more convenient to Roxbury.
The will of Henry Stevens was dated September 12, 1688 and proved August 21, 1690; with his wife, Mary receiving his house, shop and land in Boston, pluse his farm and lands at Muddy River, with all his moveables and household goods - the entire estate, during her lifetime. He owned house and land in Boston, land at Muddy River, Cambridge, and Braintry.
Henry Stevens died at Boston on June 11, 1690, according to the printed vital records.[2]
Henry Steephens died 18 June 1690 according to his gravestone at the Granary Burying Ground, Boston.[3]
? Baptism: Suggested with a gedcom import London Baptism. A quick look also turned up the Somerset baptism. Henry's origins are unknown, so as it stands, a determination of which Henry is the correct Henry cannot be made. There are probably many more in the 1609-1613 range.
