About George Hancock, 2nd

Biographical notes

From “ Buried Sitting Up – And a ‘Fed’ to Boot” May 10, 2010 by Frances Hunter

George Hancock came from one of the wealthiest and most influential families in the country. His father, also named George Hancock, owned large possessions in the Sea Islands of South Carolina. Accompanied by a large number of slaves, the elder George Hancock fled South Carolina during the early days of the Revolution, when the British took possession of the seacoast. Ill with gout, the old man faltered and died on the road.

Biographical errors

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hancock-554

The records prove conclusively that practically all of the foregoing statements as to Colonel George Hancock ancestry are incorrect. The records show that the father of Colonel George Hancock was George, his grandfather was Robert, born 1688, and not 1679.
Dorman, 20044 reported that Hancock's will (22 Dec 1780-31 Oct 1782) in Bedford Co. Will Bk. 1, pp. 434, [was] originally proved in Camden District, S.C. and that traditionally, he died while on his way from South Carolina to Virginia between the capture of Charleston (12 May 1780) and the battle of King's Mountain (7 Oct. 1780) and was buried at King's Mountain, N.C., BUT the Virginia Council granted him, 17 May 1782, permission to sell for his support slaves he had brought into the state "to avoid the vengeance of the British army" (Journals of the Council of State of Virginia, III [Richmond, 1952], p. 91). This suggests a death date bet 17 May - 31 Oct 1782.
Hancock, 2001 reported that "... according to DB 17 Page 293 (Amelia Co.) George died in Amelia Co...." - but he does not specify what that deed said.
