Edward was one of at least eight children of Dr. John S. Watson and his wife Anne Bannister Howe.
On May 1835, Edward married Louisa F. Hickman, a daughter of Frances S. Hickman. Perhaps she died in childbirth, but he married again on October 1, 1840. His second wife was Sarah Lee Crittenden. Sarah was a daughter of Kentucky Governor John Jordan Crittenden and his first wife Sarah Lee.
Edward and Sarah had at least six children:
