About Capt. George Rowland Hutchinson, OBE

AUCKLAND, September 10. Mr George Rowland Hutchinson, O.B.E., died in Auckland to-day, aged 81. Mr Hutchinson was until three years ago managing director of Hutchinsons (Wholesale), Ltd., Hutchinson Bros., Ltd., and Invincible Cash Stores, Ltd. After his retirement he remained a director. He was also a director of several other Auckland companies. Bom in Liverpool, he came to Auckland with his parents when he was nine. He began his public life at the age of 21. For many years he was a member of the Auckland City Council, and for 22 years a member of the Auckland Harbour Board. He was a major in the 1st N.Z.E.F., serving in Egypt, France, Belgium, and Palestine. He was decorated with the O.B.E. and mentioned in Earl Haig’s dispatches three times. He is survived by two sons and two daughters. There are nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Source: Press (13 September 1952, p. 8).
