Family
According to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jones-8765
Richard Jones was born about 1660 in Prince George County, VA. He was the son of Rev. Richard Jones and Martha Llewellyn.
”It is believed he married first married Sarah "Sallie" Stratton.” ?? (This was his son’s wife).
He then married, second, in about 1686, Amy Batte (daughter of Thomas Batte and perhaps Mary Randolph.) [1]. (Not Mary Randolph, Mary (unknown).)
Richard married a third (sic: second) time in 1692, Rachel Ragsdale, daughter of Godfrey Ragsdale and Rachel Rowlette (daughter of Peter Rowlett.) They were the parents of 8 children.[2]
Richard Jones was a militia captain and an Indian trader, a right that was given to him in 1712 by Governor Alexander Spotswood. Richard amassed a fortune in his trade with the Indians for beaver skins. Richard obtained a patent for 1,623 acres in 1735 In Ameia County. In 1736, the last patent recorded for Richard was for 650 acres in Brunswick County south of the Nottoway River.
Richard died in St. Andrew's Parish, Brunswick County, VA 8 Aug 1747. At the time of his death, he owned about 1,500 acres of land and 22 slaves.[3]
Origins
Summarized from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Batte-58
Thomas Batte (b abt 1642 - d aft 6 June 1795) was the son of John Batte and Martha Mallory. He married Mary (maiden name unknown).[1]
Note: Richardson shows wife of Thomas Sr. as Mary _____. No clear evidence for either Mary Randolph or Mary Jennings. His five children were by Mary _____, presumably just one of the two.
Thomas and Mary's children:[5]
- Thomas Batte, Jr. (c. 1662-1691), m Temperance Browne (one child: Martha);[6] b 1660[7]
- Martha Batte (1667-post 1717), m Jones, Banister, Cocke[7]
- Mary Batte m Peter Jones of Charles City County;[6] Mary (b 1669) m Peter Jones, brother of her sister Martha's husband Abraham Wood Jones[7]
- Amy Batte[6] (b 1671[7]), m Richard Jones[8]
- Sarah Batte (probably the Sarah Batte m 1697, John Evans, Jr.);[6] (born 1673, probably m John Evans)[9]
Thomas Batte’s Alleged Second Wife
According to William Clayton Torrence, Thomas married twice, his second wife being called Amy, who had married three times before.[5] Weis says the same in The Magna Carta Sureties - he describes Amy as "widow of __Butler, Essex Bevill and Henry Kent."[17] Kathryn Gearhart confusingly and inaccurately states on a Wordpress site that Thomas "married Amy Butler, and then married two more times to Amy then Mary Randolph." No sourcing is given.[18] The suggestion that Thomas married an Amy appears to stem from a confusion with a Thomas Bott who married someone called Amy.[19]

- Find A Grave: Memorial #67626819 Col. Richard Jones (1660-1747) states that his parents were Peter Jones and Martha Llewellyn. "Peter" appears to be a mistake and Richard was meant. The memorial states that Richard married three times: (1) Sarah "Sallie" Stratton, (2) Amy Batte, and (3) Rachel Ragsdale. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/67626819 A request has been sent to FindAGrave asking that Peter Jones and Margaret Lewelyn Wood be removed as parents.
