Through my own research [back-tracking my source] I have discovered that Alexander McAlpine Munn was NOT born on the Isle of Skye, although he was there for a time with the forces of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Here's what I know [source: Scotland's Government Index of Births, Christenings, Marriages, and Deaths 1300-1860] Alexander McAlpine Munn 8 Aug 1725 Cardross, Scotland, to 27 Feb 1776 at Moore's Creek Bridge, North Carolina. He was one of the reknown "Scottish Highlanders" who, 1000 strong and wielding not much more than bravery and broadswords, went up against Patriot forces. He died, probably by drowning - as many of them did. He was married to Mary Haggard, who collected some sort of benefits according to NARA.

  • Brothers of Alexander were Angus [c1730-1774] and Daniel [c1739]. Both were born in Cardross, Scotland. Angus died in Cumberland County, NC. Daniel also immigrated to North Carolina.
  • Parents to Alexander McAlpine Munn were:

Walter Munn 1701 Cardross Scotland, who married Janet McAlpine Walker on 10 Dec 1724 in Cardross.

Walter Munn had a brother, William [1703-aft 1729] who was born and apparently lived in Cardross Scotland.

  • Parents of Walter Munn:

Alexander Munn 3 Apr 1681- aft 1705 and Unknown of Cardross Scotland.

  • Parents of Alexander Munn:

Andrew Munn 1660-aft 1690 of Cardross Scotland and Unknown MacWalter [McWalter]

I have been unsuccessful tracing back further without definite proof. Many of the McAlpine folks I spoke with insist our Alexander and his group were descended from the rather famous Kenneth McAlpine. This, however, has not been substantiated.

Rest assured, any Munn or McAlpine folks you meet - should you still visit the Isle of Skye, will be related; not as close as you'd prefer, however. A visit to Cardross in Scotland will bring you closer to your roots.
