Hi

Geni implemented a change that will really help with GMOL numbers - have a look at https://www.geni.com/discussions/289136

And it is so much easier to use than having to add names and also known as. And others will be less inclined to remove the number,

I can get all your data moved across to a new label on the profile for you so you can see the GMOL number in the name in profile view, tree view, ancestor reports and descendant reports. . I can also get all the public profiles added to the project at the same time.

Do you have a preference on what you would like the label called ?

  • GMOL #
  • GMOL ID
  • GMOL
  • or something else

You will be able to select it from a drop down list

If you have no preference I would suggest GMOL ID.

Leanne

For me personally, I like just GMOL.

I have been using that for over two years now and that is a lot of profiles that I have worked on.

GMOL sounds fine to me.

It was my first preference however other curators believed that the word ID was needed so users knew to enter the ID number in the field.

If no-else comments on a preference in the next day or so, we'll go with GMOL

Wonderful! This will certainly enhance my experience on geni.

I can live with either GMOL ID, GMOL #, or GMOL. However my clear preference is GMOL ID or GMOL # for the sake of clarity and uniformity. My reason is that GMOL ID or GMOL # more clearly triggers folks to enter just the Number in the field. When i see GMOL i feel like i should add a number sign for clarity, but we have found over time that folks do not add the # sign in a uniform fashion. When i see GMOL ID or GMOL # i no longer feel the need to add a number sign, just a number.

If you can get all the data moved over to the new method, and also to add all the profiles to the project, that will be very helpful. Thank you!

From what I understand (and I could be wrong) the # at the beginning of the number actually meant the user had copied all the data / family from GMOL to Geni which is why some had it on and some didn’t.

Very few users are currently adding the GMOL number to Geni so it should be fairly easy to agree on which one to use.

As soon as we know what label name to use, I can ask Geni to move all the data over to it and add the profiles to the project.

Yes, the # sign in front of the numbers means that it was verified with the information with GRanDMA. Plus GRanDMA has the # in front of their numbers as well.

One downside of using the generic symbol of # to signify verified is that other users will have absolutely no idea that # means verified and a lack of an # means unverified. And they may add a # when it is unverified or remove a # when it is verified.

I would suggest changing it from a # to something more obvious to users
According to AI the symbol for verified is a check mark or a tick ie ✅✔✓

Here are 2 profiles that shows how the different ones look.
Joe Smith
Jim Smith

To see it where the name displays you will have to change your name preferences.

The only problem with that is having to create the check mark, I would rather stay with the # sign.

The # sign is readily copied from GRanDMA as it is already part of the profile.
I usually copy the whole number with the # from the GRanDMA profile so there isn't an error.

You are right where some people put a # sign there without realizing why, however, I still check it against the GRanDMA profile as things do change in GRanDMA, profiles get merged, more info added, etc.

No worries.

What do you want the label to be

  • GMOL
  • GMOL ID
  • GMOL #
  • or something else

GMOL

Just plain old GMOL

This is what GRanDMA uses as a nickname when it talks about itself.

You can see it here:

Okay we will use GMOL

If you would like the GMOL number to be shown everywhere you see the name please add the label GMOL to your name preferences under "Add Label to Profile Names" at https://www.geni.com/account_settings/name_preferences

To see how it looks you can view these 2 profiles

For any that you do for now on please follow the new instructions at https://www.geni.com/projects/GMOL-GRanDMA-Online-Prussian-Russian-Mennonite-Genealogy/4503790
You will only have to enter the label GMOL from now on - you won't need to add the value to the aka or to the other language tabs.
You will need to add the profile to the project.

I will ask Geni to move the current data across to this new label and also to add all the profiles into the project. This could take them a couple of days (maybe a week) to move all the data over.

Excellent news about moving what we have already done into the project.
I wasn't looking forward going over all the profiles to add them.
But I shall add new ones into the project.
You will let us know when the move has been done?
Thank you
Rosella R

Will do.

You might notice before I do as they will add a discussion note to each of the profiles they edit. We thought it worthwhile as whilst those in the project will be expecting the change, other users might not know why Customer Service was editing a profile they manage.

Geni have run the scripts moving 30000 or so GMOL numbers to the custom label and adding the public onss to the projwct.

Thanks for letting us know!

Did the scripts change the ones that have GM as a label as well?

One thing that I notice is that the GMOL numbers are not that searchable as it was before when it was included with the first name.

I also have seen people put GMOL numbers in the middle name and suffix fields.

Can they be moved to the GMOL field?

Rosella R

Re searchability

See https://www.geni.com/blog/new-personalize-the-way-you-view-profile-names-with-custom-profile-facts-112095.html

In the search screen - in the custom label box - enter GMOL and then the number

Re GM and the number in first name and mixdle names - could you please link to some examples and I will see what I can do

GM #
Helena D Isaac
Johann H. Ratzlaff
Margaret A Friesen

Re the searching, I will give that a go, I used to be able just type the number and it started to show up, oh well, change is always constant. :)

The GMOLs in the middle name and suffix will take me a while to find it. I had one today but didn't save it.

Here is an interesting one, it has both the GM # and GMOL.
Maria Peters

I keep finding things to tell you about.

The GMOL is in Title Field:

Thank you for all the work you are doing on getting the GMOL numbers more organized on profiles. This is very helpful in making connections between people and confirming information from other sources.

This person is using "also known as": number (GRanDMA)

Re Private

It is a private profile - the profile manager will have to change it as I don't have any "authority" to request changes to private profiles.

Any examples.of public profiles?

I will send the (GRanDMA) onss to Geni for changing

I will look for public profiles like that.

Will you also be sending in the GM # in for changing? There are a lot.
GM # examples:
Helena D Isaac
Johann H. Ratzlaff
Margaret A Friesen

I sent a request for the GM and GM # a couple of days ago.

It might take them a few weeks to do them.
