Now that so many of us have taken DNA tests, I´m wondering if this may allude to the possibility that Groote Catrijn may have had Spanish or Portuguese origins. In a document the word "Moorish" has been used as a description for her.
As a direct descendant I have a result of 2.8% Iberian ethnicity. My brother who also tested has 10.7% and a 1st cousin (also a direct descendant) has 4.1% Iberian ethnicity.
This Iberian heritage appears puzzling as I cannot account for it in any of my family history.
I am wondering if any other descendants of "Groote Catrijn" van Paliacatta" also have Iberian ethnicity that they are unable to explain?

That is interesting. Thank you for the reply.

I have 1.9% and she is also an ancestor of mine. I only had one Afrikaans great great grandmother - have wondered where the Spanish/Portuguese came from - this is a possibility.

Yes I too only have one Afrikaans grandfather. His mother was a Snyman.

Very interesting. I have 16% Iberian dna which I do not know where it comes from. I have 3 of Groote Catrijn's grandchildren in my ancestry. Which ethnic group would Moorish have refered to in the 1600's?

In a 2020 article by Mansell Upham he translates Moorish as referring to a Muslim - see Groote Catrijn van Paliacatta at Jakarta – her Trial and Banishment to the Cape of Good Hope. [https://mansellupham.wordpress.com/2020/10/08/groote-catrijn-van-pa...]

It is a very interesting article by Mansell Upham. Of specific interest for this discussion is the part on Mardijckers. " The mardijckers are a distinct colonial community that evolved out of the earlier Portuguese and later impacted by other European nations on the Indies.". Our dna resluts could suggest that Groote Catrijn was also part of this mixed community and thus the Iberain dna.

Well Tessa, one the two paths of connection to you currently calculated by Geni, is that we are 7th cousins but not mentioned through Catharina even though she is my 7th Great Grandmother (and also linked via another relative).
Perhaps I didn’t have as detailed a DNA analysis done as it does not specifically mention any Iberian origin.

Adios, Cousin ;-)

Gender: Male? Previously said Female - so why is she now male? Now she is my 9th grandfather - but she use to be my 9th grandmother ... confusing?

Did Portugal not rule India at one point - the first Portuguese to land in India was Vasco De Gama in 1498. However, the period of Portuguese rule in India is said to be between 1505 to 1961.

It is possible that even though Catharina "Groote Catrijn" van Paliacatta, (Bengale) SM/PROG is from India - she might have a Portuguese Father/grandfather...

Looked at the FTDNA updated atDNA results of myself and yes suddenly I have about 1% Portugal and a more significant Italy bit. Since I do not have any other known ancestors clearly from that area, perhaps it would indicate a Portugal/South European origin for Catharina. The rest of my slave grandmother ancestors are African and my atDNA has nothing from India. However these results do seem to change every few months. I recall having read many moons ago that females travelled more than males historically, in academic text.

The link is probably via your ancient British (Celtic) ancestors.
