Interesting. Minor nitpick: Cabot was Venetian, not Spanish or Portuguese. "Zuan" is what Venetian dialect made of the commoner "Gian" or "Giovanni". His father was said to have come from Genoa, and further deponent sayeth not.

Private User, yes, Zuanne or (shortly Zan, Zane, or Zuane) is a Venetian form of the name Giovanni, Gio, but mostly for Gian or Giam how I saw it was used and mentioned as GiamBattista or Giovanni Battista what means at croatian Ivan Krstitelj, at latin Joannes Baptista.

In some records a name was also written shortly as Gio: or Gio. Maybe further deponent was sayeth not, maybe for some unknown reason or maybe was something happened, such as political reason. Can you pls share where that written, as information, and possible in records or any other sources, if they are maybe available online, where is that mentioned, what you said above. Thanks.

Article is specific to the Lumbee people of mixed ethnicity, not to native Americans, and the point is an (overlooked) contribution to the peopling of the Americas.

It's one of those "common knowledge" things (if you have Italian ancestry) that "John Cabot" was previously known as Giovanni Caboto. That he acquired the variant "Zuan" in Venice was unknown to me until I found it in (don't laugh) Wikipedia.

The reason for Englishing his name was that he had moved to England, was working with English merchants and sailors (particularly in Bristol), and wangled a commission to explore from the English king (Henry VII, who was notoriously stingy - including in Cabot's case).
