Perhaps easiest to start with what Geni is NOT.

Geni is not perfect but it is a marvel. I have not found how it provides all of the relationship paths when more than one relationship path is present because of cousins marrying one another. I have one set of parent from the early 1600's who had 3 children - a daughter and 2 sons. All three of these people are my ancestors because of intermarriage within the next few generations. I have a "Braided Line" back to the original parents. Geni gives me the relationship path only through the eldest child.

Wiliam, the software has limitations, of course, and when you're deeply embedded in the tree, there are only so many ways (at present) to show those relationships.

World Family Tree

The large tree is colloquially referred to by many Geni genealogists monitoring this phenomenon as "The Big Tree" or the "World Family Tree".[15] Genealogists can "walk the tree" from one end to the other, or "up" toward the past and then back "down" to the present on another line. Within this tree, people are either connected by "bloodlines" or through marriage. Bloodlines (which can include adoptions and illegitimacy, either acknowledged or unacknowledged) are represented by names in blue; marriage connections are represented by names having a new colour for each marriage. "Straight blue line" relationships are those that have a high likelihood of shared DNA, although DNA connections cannot be proven by genealogy, only by DNA tests.

Erica,
Thanks for these helpful references.

Yes, I am deeply embedded in the tree. The further back in time or along deep relationship paths I go the more the number of pathways between individuals increases exponentially. I am working on the mathematics of probablility with all this since I am dealing literally with the heavenly host.

I am swinging from the tree more than walking it. I swing from one branch with lots of fruit over to another branch with plentiful fruit or stop at personalities I recognize from earlier research, then track back. Sometime I fall out of the tree and fall even faster than today's DOW. The swinging may say something about my bouts of dizziness as I work with Geni and may be replicating my deep ancestry.

I have joined http://www.geni.com/projects/Working-with-Relationships/17570 and am finding it helpful.

Thanks for your tips, Erica. You are a real pro!

Happy swinging!

I feel more like a mouse. Nibble at this piece of cheese. Run the maze. Get distracted by another piece of cheese. Get totally lost. :):)
