Did you see the Alfre Woodard episode on "Who Do You Think You Are?". They tracked her slave ancestor to "Woodardville" in Georgia (I think it was Georgia). Nothing there anymore of his farm from the plantation nearby but some street signs. One time plantations might be perfect examples of abandoned settlements ....
This is one of my favorites!! http://www.geni.com/projects/Crawford-Family-Plantations-Georgia/25424
I had a hunch that the model Cindy Crawford was connected to this family. I was right. I made the connection.
Awesome work on Cindy. Wow.
There is also a Woodardville in Bienville Parish LA - the slave owning Woodard family there (i would presume related to the same one in GA) had a hard time of it in Reconstruction.
This is Alfre's slave ancestor: Alex Woodard
By the way, Alfre's husband has a wonderful diverse tree, so many of us connect to her family through his.
I have chatted with not only Washington County (GA) Rawlings and Daniel from the VA-NC border area, but several other families who came after the Revolutionary War. They either knew each other there or met as soldiers (Patriots), and came together to get their Lottery (lot of land).
