This discussion is being started in an effort to co-ordinate all questions & comments about projects that connect to the Cause of Death Portal. It would be nice to have one site / discussion for all of the discussions relating to this Portal. Right now I think there are at lease 11 discussions related to this Portal. It would allow Erica and other curators to follow-up on those projects that may need a little tweaking or other assistance. It will also benefit everyone interested in this project/portal to learn from questions someone else has asked. I often don't know what I don't know until someone else asks a question...
If you have a cause of death that you don't see listed, this is the place to ask about including it, including what to call the project if you are unsure & maybe would like to create the related project. If you don't know how to connect the project to the Portal, ask, although I think Erica put the steps in one of the discussions... If you don't want to create the project, it allows the idea to be picked up by someone else. It could also be a place to let others know if you are working on one of the cause of death projects so we don't end up with more than one person creating a project.
I am learning how to create projects for this Portal & have found that if I start by putting everything in a word document first & organize it there it makes it easier to copy / paste it into the "Start a New Project" document form (found on YOUR Project page on the top right in green above the projects you belong to)... then once created, you can modify, formate, add alt. names / tags, & associated projects (ie: Cause of Death Portal, Epidemics (under Infections) for Cholera, if it is a sub topic under another heading, such as Homicides with shooting under -- add Homicides.) Once finished you could mention it here with name of your project so the curators &/or others could help fine-tune if you miss something.
Look for pictures that might go with the project -- tactful ones -- I have found several for each of the project I have added as I wasn't sure which might be preferred. The pix will go into YOUR photo album also. I created an album named "Projects" so they all go there as I have more than one project that I was adding pix for. What you do depends on how you have your photo albums organized & how many pix you are adding to the different projects. Don't forget that you will need to be a collaborator of any project you want to add pix to...
Remember if you create the project that is added you can make changes, otherwise you need to request to collaborate on the project -- even to add pix that might go with a project.
If you copy & paste this to very bottom of the project you have created it will connect it to the "Cause of Death Portal": (It is generic, so will work for ALL related projects!)

Hope this discussion will be a big help to all who are interested in this big project/portal!!!!!!!!
Gangrene was a tricky one, my uncle Karl-Erik died 2005 of that, at the Servicehuset Uddängen, Mölndal, a place for old people, but actually, He had injured his leg in the stairs, they put him in a bed and just let that decease develop until he died of it, maybe that should be put under some disguised euthanasia or just negligence?
My father is stated to have died from Cerebral Trombos, Stroke, but actually, that was a minor part of it, whilst at the hospital Sahlgrenska in Göteborg, a nurse gave him an insulin injection, and no, he was not diabetic, so his heart stopped, they immediately started it again, but he fell in a coma and never woke up. This happened 1988, guess that sort of things still occurs. I witnessed this shit, but I was standing behind the door in the corridor, so they did not see me, so in fact, he died of malpractice, or, worse, by the hand of what we in Sweden call, "dödsängel", a death angel, I don't know what that would be called in English.
FYI: I have just added a Glossary of Related infectious Disease Terms -- not for profiles, but may help those not medically knowledgable understand some of the medical terms. If there are any terms you would like added, please feel free to add them (keep them alphabetical) or put a note here & I will add them.
I will be working on general Infectious Diseases Project that will cover both those that Epidemic (already there) and for those that aren't -- It will be like Epidemic, not for profiles, but general info... then we can add those infectious causes that don't fit under epidemic -- Gangrene would be one of those...
Have completed one for Scarlet Fever that could be used for both those who died from or survived this disease. Many who survived had complications--Helen Keller is a good example--her deafness & blindness were a result of her having Scarlet Fever.
Martin, I found that "scorbut" is the same as scurvy-- there is a project for that now...
Did you mean tuberculosis??? there is a project for that already.
Will look to see what I can find on grippe espagnole
Since I am a nurse, (retired), it has been interesting researching these diseases & infections. Any other diseases or infections you all would like me to make a priority (because you have someone you want to add to it???)
Martin, when I entered grippe espagnole into google, it came up in French??? I shortened it to just "grippe" and got that it is an old fashioned French term for influenza, which could be added as a tag in that project. If what you are thinking of is something else, would you see if you can give me the English version of it??? Thanks.
Pat
@Martin
See this project: https://www.geni.com/projects/1918-lnfluenza-Pandemic/24138 -- The Related Project covers many, many countries...
and:
https://www.geni.com/projects/1918-lnfluenza-Pandemic-Canada-Fatali...
If you go to the first one there is a project for Canada-Survivors also listed in the "Related Projects" (click on the "show all" & look down the list)
Since there were specific years for 6 Influenza pandemic / epidemics I will do a project for each of those, so people can put the profiles in the specific influenza project by year, if appropriate, and then one that is "Influenza: non-epidemic" for everyone else who dies of influenza (the flu).
If people would like to have a project for a specific country during one of the pandemic years... a project for that country can be created, & add it to the list in the "Related Projects".
If we list the countries in the Portal project, listing it there could get out of hand... What do you all think???
Calling it "train wreck" http://www.geni.com/projects/Train-wreck/28151 but it's for death in ANY sort of train related incident. If it gets cumbersome or confusing we can spin off.
CRUSHED BY FALLING TREE
I have two in my tree who died from a tree falling on them. One was a workplace accident (in a lumber yard), the other might be characterized as a freak accident.
I would be OK characterizing both of them as simply "accidental death," but I wonder what others think?
I see there is a stub under "Accidental Death" called "Unusual," perhaps that would be the best place to put them.
Unless others think we need a separate project for Crushed by Falling Tree?
---------------
GANGRENE:
I also have two from gangrene. Gangrene is not always due to infection, so I'm not sure what larger category that should go into.
"Gangrene (or gangrenous necrosis) is a type of necrosis caused by a critically insufficient blood supply.[1][2] This potentially life-threatening condition may occur after an injury or infection, or in people suffering from any chronic health problem affecting blood circulation.[2] The primary cause of gangrene is reduced blood supply to the affected tissues, which results in cell death.[3] Diabetes and long-term smoking increase the risk of suffering from gangrene.[2][3]"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gangrene
-------------------------
AORTIC DISSECTION. Examples: actor John Ritter, King George II of Great Britain.
Not sure what larger category to put that into. Vascular Disease? Heart Disease? Do we have a medical professional (or even a student) in the group?
--------------------------------------
Should Heart Attack and Heart Disease both be listed under Heart Disease?
Patricia Ann Scoggin (nurse) - do you want to try the heart question http://www.geni.com/discussions/149945?msg=1045208
I think Patricia already made a Gangrene project.
====
Trees. Hmm. I have yet to make an umbrella "accident" project. Sawmill, chain saw, etc. accidents are common enough unfortunately - just added "Killed on the job" and am about to add "Killed on the farm."
I got distracted by the trivia that more people are killed by cows than by sharks, so next up is Man-Eaters! (Killed by an animal)
Erica Howton I thought I had made a project for gangrene also, but don't see it so it must be on my "to do" list--Will work on it next--still have to finish up the specific Influenza projects for: 1969, 1977, 2009.
As far as the specific heart problems... would suggest a general info for Cardiac / Heart Problems that would cover many causes of death related to the heart, which would include under that "hat" the Chronic Heart Failure & Heart Attack projects that we already have. Then as we have more specific cardiac or circulatory causes of more recent times we can create specific project from them as they come up... Keep in mind that medically they didn't know in the past what we know today.
I will look to see what I can find for the Cardiac / Heart Problems for the general project and add it to my "to do" list.
I just realized that Bubonic Plague and Black Death have become the same project, but can they be separate things?
The Black Death was a particular occurrence of the bubonic plague, the most horrific occurrence.
But the plague recurred fairly regularly and indeed is still with us. We lose a few people to it every year in New Mexico.
I'd like the Black Death project to commemorate just that one short time frame.
Can that be done?
Under capital punishment, there is, in the section on hangings, a place for notable hangmen.
We need a project for electrocutions, (maybe I just missed it? It's late here) and the we can add notable electrocutioners.
Such as my great grandfather: Robert Greene Elliott
You descend from electrocutioners? Now that "is" a claim to fame. Remember the Gene Wolfe, science fiction, Book of the New Sun?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shadow_of_the_Torturer
Yes, we will get separate projects going for
- Bubonic Plague (except the Black Death)
- executioners
--- hangmen
-- electrocutioners
Erica Howton I am working on a general project for the Cardiac problems "Cardiac / Heart Health Issues (Cardiovascular Diseases)"
In researching it I found that Dying of a "Broken Heart" is a real thing... Should I include it at the bottom of the above project or put it as a separate project with the info that I found or both??? Do we have anyone who has died of this??? Maybe I should just make a project for it & put it under the Cardiac / Heart umbrella and see if anyone knows of someone who did die of this???
I didn't think there would be many who would be added to the "Died of a Broken Heart" but went ahead & made it into a project anyway, then looked for more info (had found 1 site about it). Did find quite a bit more info and several people who died of this, (don't know if they are in Geni or not...) Sooo, I guess there is a good probability that Geni members may have some additions to this project. I put it under the Cardiac/Heart umbrella...
I don't have dates for these people, but have a feeling their deaths have been in the last few years...
Edmund Williams, Wales
Marjorie Hartland, Wales died after 101 y/o husband, Clifford died
Don Simpson died 4 hrs after wife, Maxine
Kenneth Felumlee of Nashport, Ohio died 15 hrs after wife, Helen
Marcus Ringrose died day after wife, Mary Tamm in 2012
Simon Monjack, 39 died 5 mo after wife, Brittany Murphy
If anyone wants to look for these people & add them to the project I would appreciate it... If you want to add more info in the project (dates) for any of them I would appreciate that also.
Yes! Re: Died of a broken heart. Perfect!
In fact we have Sarah's daughter in law in the Bible Eugene Thomas and I were trying to figure out. She was weak from a hard childbirth, got bad news, and died. Cause of death ? I'd say she "died of grief," and this project is the best we'll know.
Also, I think Amy Nordahl Cote had someone?
Amy, "killed by a falling object" is right for your crushed by a tree guy.
I've also made projects for "unusual deaths," "executioners" ( actually an occupation), "killed by animals," "snakebite," "machine deaths," and "killed on the job."
Can we get a project count update ?
Oh, and alcohol poisoning - up there on death stats.
Also cirrhosis, then, and "wet brain"
