Anyone know how I could obtain gravestone pics or know of a list I could look up names to determine where the gravesite is of:

Theresa Florence Botha (born Gregory) estimated birth date around 1880 died 15/10/1918
Know she has a grave in one of the cemeteries in Kimberley but don't know which one. Been looking on eGGSA list at http://www.eggsa.org/cgi-bin/library/searchGraves.pl but do not find any record of her.

Assuming the following also have graves there:
Edward Gregory
Alfred Gregory

Thank you

Not all the graves have necessarily been photographed. Some municipalities have good recording of persons' graves and their number, which makes it easier to locate.

Thanks Daniel

Can we not start a Grave Project to assit EGGSA to update all the graveyards photo's and details ....

So many of us are on GENi and we live in different parts of South Africa (World)

If we get togheter in groups and go take photos, record the plot name and everything surrounding that grave - will we not help to complete it quickly and in the same way help each other to have photo's of graves of family members far away.

We live in times where traveling has become expensive ...

what do you think??

Hi Wilhelmina

GGSA are busy with exactly that...They have many more photographed graves available on CD's I believe... If you want to contribute I think the best way would be to contact them, thereby not duplicating effort..

Regards
Donovan

My meaning was that we work with them and send the photo's to them ... to help their project, but also our work :-)

Cape Town Greetings
Willa

I think that is a Fantastic Idea Wilhelmina.

I am eternally grateful to Daan and EGGSA - They have both helped me tremendously in my family research. Many researchers have a distance problem and cannot access physical gravesites or records without the help of others.
With our technology we should be able to assist one another.

As Donovan mentioned - we should co-ordinate properly thereby avoiding duplication and lost time (not to mention limited resources.

Another site I just came across is www.billiongraves.com
If you have a cellphone, you can take pictures of the gravesite and upload them. If you want - you can transcribe them or have others do it.
Also uses the GPS on your phone to pinpoint the grave. Unfortunately there aren't any South African graves loaded on there yet - though they do show the cemeteries.

Exactly and we can not all travel :-) We all have family graves around the globe and it matters not where in the world we are - we can help.

How about if we start a project - Daan - you more experience than me - here on GENi, working with EGGSA, and each one that is willing to help - come rapport at the project, stating the town you are at - so that people in the same town (surroundings) can arrange meetings and make necessary arrangements to be save while taking photo's of grave's ...

and I think we should ask EGGSA to add a global grave page too - most of us have family around the globe - not just centuries ago - but right now. I have cousins all over the globe - some born in SA - others not.

I'm willing to help, got plenty grave photo's. My work is a lot of travel in the freestate & northern cape.

Pieter, have you sent yours to Eggsa? If I am not sure, I just sent to them to EGGSA , and they will upload if it is not a duplicate.

Photo's of memorials in Europe, USA, and some Latin American countries

Grafstenen in NL: http://www.online-begraafplaatsen.nl/

I might be able to help with gravestones in NL if you cannot find what you are looking for on the above two websites.

Greetings
Chris

Pieter et al,
I will give you the chairpersons's who is also the organiser of the graveyard project email . Just email me direclty at judimeyer@mweb.co.za.

We are really always looking for volunteers in towns but very much so on farms. The way the cemetries are being left to go to nothing we are losing a lot of very valuable genealogical information.
Chris thanks for the link to NL graves.
