Otero is a "Watch-tower" in Spanish. It also means a hill or "Altar"- a high place.
The first Otero in New Mexico was Cayetano de Otero, a Franciscan priest born in Galicia, Spain in 1701; professed as a priest in 1724 and was in Zuni Pueblo by 1731. While in Albuquerque he and Maria Quiteria Duran y Chavez had a relationship that produced the Otero clan of New Mexico.
