origin
The name is uncommon and is believed to have originated in the Schleswig-Holstein region of Northern Germany and most likely derived from the old german word Krahn meaning a crane. Apparently, in old German, the "a" in Krahn was pronounced like our modern day "o", thus the "Krohn" family name. One version of the Krohn coat of arms depicts a crane holding a rock in its claw. This illustrates that Krohns are alert and watchful; if the crane should fall asleep, the rock falls on to its other claw awakening the bird!
