The surname may be found spelled as Oelbaum, Album, Albom, Ohlbaum, and Elboim, just to cite a few variations. There is evidence that all are descended from R' Yaakov Kopel of Lukowa, also known to be from Klonimum, some of whose children took the surname when Jews were required to use surnames by civil authorities in Poland. The name means "olive tree" and is said to have been first adopted in memory of ancestors who raised olive trees in Spain.
