The name Bloch, in Hebrew, is an acronym for the words Bnei Levi ve' Cohen--meaning sons of Levi and Cohen. The Blochs originate in the area of the town of Colmar, in Alsace-Lorraine, now located in France.
However, early records of the Jewish people of Neuern/Nyrsko have the surname spelled as Ploch and Plach., which casts doubt on this acronymic hypothesis. In a paper on the Jews of Neuern which comes up prominently in a Google search, there appears the text of a translation into German of a decree in Czech of Ulrich von Janowitz dated 25 April 1466 giving permission to the Jew Baroch to settle there with his whole household under this knight's protection. Familiar phonetic laws suggest that Baroch, or Baruch, may have been an early form of this surname. So many Blochs lived in the area that Nyrsko was called Blochowitz..
