Biography

William Throop was born in Nottinghamshire, England.

William Throope, the son of Thomas Throope and Elizabeth Smyth, was born before 8 August 1613 at Lound in the parish of Sutton cum Lound, Nottinghamshire. He was baptised at the parish church of St Bartholomew[1]:

[1613] Lo[und] - Bapt - Wm the sonne of Tho: & Elyzabeth Throope was baptized the - 8 Aug[ust]

On 9 June 1636, William married Izabell Redshaw. From the original parish register of Sutton cum Lound (which is a combined register with all events entered chronologically): [1]

[1636 heading] Lound - Wed - William Throope of Haiton and Izabell Redshaw of Lound were married - June 9no

A little over nine months later, their first child was baptised on 19 March 1636/7[1]:

[1636 heading] Lound - Bap: William ye son of William Throope & Izabell his wife baptized ye 19 th of March - 19no

Isabell and William were parents to at least 8 children who have entries in the parish register of Sutton cum Lound, or were mentioned in wills:

  1. William baptised 19 March 1636/7 at Sutton cum Lound. Bequeathed a heifer in the will of William Redshaw his grandfather. Not in England when his father wrote his will in September 1669.
  2. Thomas no baptism record found in the parish register of Sutton cum Lound, but he was born before September 1641 as he was bequeathed a heifer in the will of William Redshaw his grandfather. Executor of his father's will in 1670.
  3. Mary no baptism record found in the parish register of Sutton cum Lound, but was probably born after September 1641 as she is not mentioned in will of William Redshaw her grandfather. Mentioned in her father's will in 1670.
  4. Issabell baptised at the parish of church of St Bartholomew, Sutton cum Lound, Nottinghamshire, England on 26 October 1645: [2]
  5. George baptised at Sutton-sum-Lound on 30 January 1648/9 [2]
  6. Sara baptised at Sutton-sum-Lound on 13 April 1652, buried 23 October 1652
  7. John baptised at Sutton-sum-Lound on 27 October 1653. Survived both of his parents and died in 1671

Isabell gave birth to her last child in June 1658, which was was either stillborn or who died shortly after birth unbaptised. This child was buried on 19 June 1658 at St Bartholomew, Sutton-cum-Lound. An inksplot obscures the word "not" in the parish register entry: [2]

[1658] Lo[und] - Bur - A child of William & Issabell Throupe [not] Baptized was Buried the -- 19 June

Isabell was buried 3 days later, also at St Bartholomew, and her burial was the next entry in the register:
[1658] Lo[und] - Bur - Issabell the wife of William Throupe was Buried the -- 22 June

Isabell was one of the four co-heirs of William Redshaw of Lound, along with her three sisters. On 25 March 1656, she and William ("William Throope of Lound in the parish of Sutton and Lound, in the Countie of Nottingham, yeoman and Issabell now his wife") sold their one-fourth part of the Redshaw land to "Thomas Chauntree of Smithees in the parish of Thorpe Salvin in the county of York" for "seaven and forty pounds" in hand. The property was arable land in the occupation of Ann Redshaw widow. To be holden of the chief Lord or Lords of the Fee or Fees thereof.

In 1660, William served as a churchwarden of the parish of Sutton cum Lound along with Richard Plater. In that same year he was also one of the "Billsmen for the Coroner" with Rob[ert] Staniforth. [2] 1660
William Throup and Richard Plater - Churchward[ens]
William Throupe and Rob Staniforth - Billsmen for the Corn[er]'

In 1662 William served as the parish Constable: [2]
William Throup - Constab[le]

... and in 1666, he served as one of four Bylawmen for the Common and Highways: [2]
Henry Barker, Will[iam] Throop, Tho Cop[per]white, John Feninear - Bylawemen for ye Com[m]on & high wayes Lound Like for Sutton

In 1668, William was Overseer for the poor in Lound. His name was entered with that of John Fox whose name has been struke through: [2]
Overseers for ye poore for LoundJohn ffox & Will[iam] Throop

This is the last entry in the Parish Officers Book for William. In 1670, his son Thomas was elected as one of the Bylawmen.

William married Elizabeth Cooke on 7 February 1664/5 at the parish Church of St Bartholomew, Sutton-cum-Lound, Nottinghamshire:[1]
[1664] Lo[und] - Wed - William Throupe and Elizabeth Cooke was married the --- 7 ffebruary

Elizabeth passed away in the summer of 1669 and William had his Will written for him on 2 December 1669 when he was "weake in Body", signing it with his mark. [3] A transcription is here: Transcription of Will of William Throope of Lound, Nottinghamshire, 1670.

The Will refers to six people, all with the surname Throope:

  • Sonne Will Throope, if "do return into his native Country" "shall enjoy an equal portion with the rest of my children"
  • Mary Throope my daughter, received a cow, a sheep and a chest
  • Isabell Throope, received a sheep and a trunk
  • George Throope, received a sheep
  • John Throope, received a cow, a sheep and a bay horse
  • Thomas Throope, executor of Will, received Testator's bible and a chest

Two of these are described by William as a son and a daughter; the other four were probably also his children. No wife is mentioned.

William was buried at the church of St Bartholomew, Sutton-cum-Lound on 28 January 1669/70. The parish register gave him the honorific of "senex" (elderly man):[1]
[1669] Lo[und] - Bur[ial] William Throop Senex was Buryed the -- 28 Jan[uar]ii

His Will was proved 10 months later, on 23 November 1670 at the Archdeaconry Court of Retford.

Comments

Across Throup's Bridge

This book has a chapter on William's eldest son, William[5]. It contains a number of errors, the worst of which is attaching the father's second wife, Elizabeth Cooke, as the son's first wife, thereby making him a bigamist.
