About William Goodrich, of Bury St. Edmunds

William Goodrich BIRTH unknown, Felsham, Mid Suffolk District, Suffolk, England DEATH 24 Oct 1631, Hessett, Mid Suffolk District, Suffolk, England BURIAL St Ethelbert Churchyard, Hessett, Mid Suffolk District, Suffolk, England, MEMORIAL ID 195449748, Picture by Steve Goodrich

William is: William Goodrich I (~1545-1631) of Hessett, Suffolk, England, son of Robert Goodrich (~1505-1570) of Felsham, Suffolk, England, son of John Goodrich (~1477-1558) of Felsham, Suffolk, England.

William Goodrich I of Hessett was the third son named in the 26 Jun 1563 will of Robert Goodrich of Felsham and his wife Elizabeth that bequeathed, in the order that his children were named in the will: all freehold and copyhold lands and tenements in Felsham to Adam Goodrich, £20 to Thomas Goodrich, £20 to William Goodrich, £10 to Emma Goodrich, £10 to Elizabeth Goodrich, £20 to John Goodrich, and made provision for widow Elizabeth to be cared for and have access to the living quarters on his Felsham properties in which his father had dwelled at the time of his decease.

William married Margaret Richardson on 07 Nov 1568 at the parish of St. Peter-Felsham. However, all of their children with known surviving baptismal records were baptized at St. Ethelbert-Hessett, beginning with Robert Goodrich bp. 05 May 1577, William Goodrich II bp. 11 Sep 1580, Henry Goodrich bp. 12 Jan 1583/4, and Susan Goodrich bp. 30 May 1591.

Henry Goodrich is listed in the baptismal register as the third son, and a Hessett deed of feoffment and livery of seisin (06 Oct 1585) that named "William Goodrich and Robert his son" confirms that Robert Goodrich was the eldest son. However, eldest son Robert Goodrich; named by family tradition after paternal grandfather Robert Goodrich, and third son Henry Goodrich were not surviving heirs named in the 04 Apr 1631 will of William Goodrich I of Hessett that was proved on 02 Feb 1631/2, in which what had to be the youngest surviving son, John Goodrich, was named first as the principal heir to whom all land and tenements in Hessett were bequeathed, followed by bequeaths of ₤16 to second son William Goodrich, ₤8 to daughter Elizabeth (Goodrich) Clarke; wife of Phillip Clarke, and ₤8 to daughter Susan (Goodrich) Beamond; wife of John Beamond.

The birth-baptism of the youngest surviving son John Goodrich had to be after 12 Jan 1583/4, and since he married Margerie Howe on 07 Aug 1615, and Margerie Howe; daughter of John Howe and Margerie Lonsdale, was baptized at St Mary-Bury St. Edmunds on 15 Dec 1588, John Goodrich was likely born ~1587. Daughter Elizabeth (Goodrich) Clarke, who married Phillip Clarke at Bradfield St. George on 25 Jul 1623, probably married late in life since they had no known children, and so Elizabeth may have also been born between 1584-1591, or she and any number of other daughters (at least one of whom and possibly the oldest of whom could have been named Margaret after her mother) who died before 04 Apr 1631 may have been born before eldest son Robert Goodrich was baptized on 05 May 1577. In this regard, it is noteworthy that the parish register transcripts of St. Peter-Felsham lack the years 1569-1570 and 1572-1573, and the parish register of St. Ethelbert-Hessett lacks the years 1569-1574.

Seven months after the burial of his wife Margaret (Richardson) Goodrich at Hessett on 22 Mar 1630/1, William Goodrich I of Hessett was buried at Hessett on 24 Oct 1631.

Next-generation-sequencing (NGS) Y-SNP testing established in 2015 that Y-descendants of immigrants William-1 Goodrich/Goodridge of Watertown, MA and William-1 Goodrich of Wethersfield, CT; first-cousins who share common grandfather William Goodrich I of Hessett (~1545-1631), share the Y-SNP mutation E-FGC44079 that is not shared by Y-descendants of immigrant Thomas-1 Goodrich of Old Rappahannock, VA; a second cousin who shares common great-grandfather Robert Goodrich of Felsham (~1505-1570).

Y-descendants of all 3 immigrant ancestors, however, do share E-L1019 and an additional 37 Y-SNP mutations after E-Z16242, that have been seen only in Y-descendants of Robert Goodrich of Felsham (~1505-1570) so far.

As for E-Z16242: so far it has been seen in all Felsham Goodrich Y-descendants and in 3 non-Goodrich individuals, so far, who trace their Y-ancestry to Portugal, which at one time was part of the Roman Province of Hispania (beginning with the Roman conquest of Hispania, from the Balkans, in 218 BC); one of a number of military gateways to what was then Britannia, and is now England, from 43-400 AD.

The first son of William Goodrich II of Hessett; believed to be William Goodrich III of Hessett and later the immigrant William Goodridge of Watertown, MA is the only Y-descendant of William Goodrich I of Hessett capable of bringing about this order of Y-SNP relationship. ∼
The basis of the brothers John and Ens. William Goodrich, who immigrated from England and settled at Wethersfield, Conn. by the mid-1640s, was first published in 1889 by Lafayette Wallace Case in "The Goodrich Family in America." In 1953 Vol. II of "The Ancestry of Col. John Harrington Stevens, and his wife Frances Helen Miller," or Stevens-Miller for short, was published by Winifred Lovering Holman on behalf of her deceased mother, Mary Lovering Holman. This work contains further evidence and records concerning the Goodrich family of Bury St. Edmunds not included by Case in 1889. These two works are incorporated in the following presentation.

William Goodrich of Hessett in Suffolk, England is the documented beginning of what is known about the Wethersfield, Conn. Goodrich family. William had a wife Margaret. Stevens-Miller cites a marriage of a William Goodrich and Margaret Richardson at Felsham in 1568 from the Suffolk Marriage Index at Ipswich, and suggests this was probably the marriage of William Goodrich of Hessett. "It must be from a transcript as the earliest extant register of Felsham begins in 1656." There is no proof that this was the marriage of the Wethersfield Goodrich's grandparents. Although Felsham is the parish town just south of Hessett, the present writer chooses not to endorse the Steven-Miller conclusion.

One basis of the Stevens-Miller work needs to be corrected. This was the assumed reason why baptism records for some of the descendant family in England could not be located. Stevens-Miller more than once repeats the theme that "he was probably born in his mother's parish and if so, the law compelled his baptism there." At the time Anglican Church law required a family to attend and support the parish church where they lived, and the children to be baptized where the parents resided. Where the mother was born had nothing to do with where a child was baptized.

William Goodrich's wife Margaret was buried at Hessett Mar. 22, 1630/1. Seven months later William Goodrich d. testate and was buried at Hessett Oct. 24, 1631. [1631, "Sepulti, Guglielmus Gotheridge vicesimo quarto Octobris."] He left the following abstracted will dated Apr. 4, 1631, proved Feb. 2, 1631/2 at the Archdeaconry Court of Sudbury:

• To son John Gooderich, all his houses, lands, and tenements at Hessett (spelled Hegessett in the will), both freehold and copyhold, and he to pay or render to William's other children, namely: • to William's son William Gooderich, £16 [%C2%A34 within one year, the balance within seven years]; • to William's dau. Elizabeth Clarke, wife of Philip Clarke, £8 [%C2%A34 within two years, the balance within five years]; • to William's dau. Susan Beamond, wife of John Beamond, £8 [%C2%A34 within three years, the balance within six years]. • if son John did not pay his three siblings their legacies, then William's other children not fully paid "maie enter into all the said howses and hereditaments and the same to occupie Untill he or they shalbe fully satisfied." • Son John Gooderich to be executor of the will. • Witnessed by John Whyte, John Bateley and John Tapley.

Stevens-Miller provides William and Margaret Goodrich five children. But as son John is the focus of the family descent only he is continued in this presentation.

Stirnet's "Goodricke1" page (membership required to view without interruption does not mention this William. Seeing that he was of Suffolk, it is unlikely that he was closely connected to the Goodricke/Goodrick/Goodrich family of Yorkshire.
