The names of William's parents are unknown at this stage.

William Carter signed his will on 14 August 1521; proved 30 August 1521.[1] He described himself as being of Watford. His wife Alice was executrix; the overseer was William Hyll.[2] He made bequests to and mentioned:

  • my daughter Alice
  • my daughter Joan
  • my son Richard
  • my son William, property in St Albans
  • my son John, property in Rickmanworth
  • any godchildren
  • my wife Alice, executrix
  • William Hyll, overseer

He also made multiple bequests to the church, both in Watford and the "mother church" of St Albans as well as an organization called "The Brotherhood". He also left money to be used on the repair of the highway.[1]

Although Currer-Briggs included the will of William Carter of Watford in an appendix, he did not connect him in the narrative to the three sons noted above; but their inherited properties, clearly specified in the will, establish their identity beyond any doubt. [3]

William requested burial in the church at Watford, Hertfordshire..[1]
