William Buchan, here treated, was a Sailor whose usual place of residence was in the parish of Airth in Stirlingshire. He is not the same person as VI William Buchanan of Auchmar who was the heritable proprietor of Auchmar in the parish of Buchanan, and other lands in Stirlingshire.

They were booked for procamation on 6 October 1738, at St. Ninians in Stirlingshire, Scotland, and they were married on 27 October 1738. Their marriage record reads as follows: "E. D. [6 October 1738] John Mc callah laull son to the deceased Alexr Mc callah portioner in Cowie bank in this paroch & Katharine Buchan laull daughter to Wm Buchan Sailler in the paroch of Airth gave up their names to be proclaimed in order to marriage.
