About William Ansley
Fact 1: 1733 A weaver, he came to America in1733 according to some church records.
Fact 2: 1735 One of 59 people who joined the Old Tennant Presbyterian Church in Monmouth, N.J
William was one of 59 persons who joined the Old Tennent Presbyterian Church, Freehold, on June 8, 1735. The following year, his wife Rebecca became a member. William was a weaver by trade.
William joined Old Tennent Presbyterian Church (Monmouth Co NJ) on June 8, 1735; the following year, his wife, Rebecca, also joined there. One source (http://xpda.com/family/default.htm?page=toc_individuals.htm) says he came to America in 1733 •Note: The book "History of Old Tennent Presbyterian Church", by Frank Rosebrook Symmes, 1904 (author was a minister at that church during the 1904 period) lists "persons admitted to the Lord's Table" on June 8, 1735. Sixty people are listed, including one William Annesley. Another later entry lists the baptism of 4 of his children "William Annesley had baptized Thomas, March 20, 1737, ______ _______ July 16, 1738 (author's note: this had to be Benjamin Annesley), William and Rebeca, twins, Sep 2, 1744"
The author (Bill Ansley ... 2010) reviewed this book in some detail and noted that there were essentially no Morris or Cox surnames among these Presbyterians. The Cox family was known to be Baptist leaning and nothing is known of the Morris' family leanings. If, as some speculate, Rebecca (wife of William) was a Cox, then William must have been a strong Presbyterian to remain in that church vs. his wife's family's church (Old Yellow Meeting House-Baptist).
This book states that it was begun (around 1692) by staunch Scotland Presbyterians and Dutch Reformed Presbyterians.
William Ansley was born in 1710 and first appears in early records when he joined the Old Tennent Presbyterian Church in Monmouth County, New Jersey on June 8, 1735. William Ansley married Rebecca whose last name is unknown. Rebecca joined the church a year later, Therefore, it is suggested that they married in the intervening time. [1][2]
Their son Thomas was baptized at the Old Tennent Church in Monmouth on March 20, 1737.
The Old Tennent Church was established by Scottish Presbyterians fleeing the despotic persecution of Charles II, who especially disliked the foes of his Catholic Scottish allies. So William was probably an immigrant from Scotland, and, being a Presbyterian, he would not have been allowed to live peacefully in the Puritan theocracy of Massachusetts..[2]
William was probably an immigrant from Scotland, and, being a Presbyterian, he would not have been allowed to live peacefully in the Puritan theocracy of Massachusetts. William and Rebecca Ansley had several children: among them were two of (the Jimmy Carter) ancestors, Thomas Ansley (1737-1809) and Mary Ansley (1745-1815).[2]
