Wilhelm Furtwaengler was one of the most esteemed orchestral conductors of the 20th century. He first conducted his own First Symphony in Munich at the age of 20, He became conductor in Luebeck in 1911, Mannheim in 1915, the Berlin State Opera in 1919, and both the Berlin Phiilharmonic (until his death) and the Leipzig Gewandhaus (until 1928) orchestras in 1922, succeeding Arthur Nikisch in both positions. He was a lifelong composer, notable for his Second Symphony (which he recorded in 1951), but he concentrated his efforts on his conducting career. His recordings of Beethoven and Wagner were legendary. Virtually all of the studio recordings and broadcast concerts have endured on the record market with undiminished popularity
