Also, there is no connection between the Bussel family and the Busli or de Busli family.

In the twelfth Century, if not earlier, the manors of Standish and Langtree belonged to the extensive Penwortham barony, which at that time was held by the Bussel family. Warine Bussel, Lord of Penwortham, held that barony about the middle of the twelfth century, and was living in 1186. Among his holdings were Standish, Langtree, Hoghton and many other manors in Lancashire which he divided up among his children.

Children of Warine Bussel:

  1. Richard Bussell, Lord of Penwortham who flourished in 1150-1164, gave the two Standish and Langtree ploughlands to Richard Spileman who married the granters sister.
  2. Albert Bussel
  3. Geoffrey Bussel
  4. Daughter, m. Richard Spileman
  5. Daughter, m. Hamlet le Boteler, ancestors of the Hoghtons of Hoghton Tower, Lancashire, was granted two ploughlands in Heaton in Lonsdale and Eton.
  6. Daughter, m. Alan son of Swain, to whom was given Gunofsmoors (now Hoghton)

~The Families of Standish, pp. 2-3

The Lancashire Inquests, Extents and Feudal Aids, by William Farrer, refers to six daughters of Warine Bussel, who are given in marriage either by their father or their brother Richard.[1]

Unfortunately only one daughter is named and it's impossible to tell if these are six separate sisters, or whether some of them may have been widowed and these marriages represent a second or even third marriage.

Penwortham Priory was founded in the 1140s when Warin (de) Bussel, a Norman Lord who was the first Baron of Penwortham, transferred St Mary’s Church to the Benedictine abbey of Evesham in Worcestershire. The abbot funded the building of the priory and sent a prior and three monks to serve.
  • List of Chapelries Within Penwortham Parish. < link > PENWORTHAM (St. Mary), a parish, in the union of Preston, hundred of Leyland, N. division of Lancashire; containing, with the chapelry of Longton, and the townships of Farington, Howick, and Hutton, 5498 inhabitants, of whom 1372 are in Penwortham township, 1¾ mile (S. W.) from Preston. William the Conqueror bestowed this place on Roger de Busli, joint lord of the hundred of Blackburn; and it is highly probable that the castle of Penwortham was one of the baronial residences of this favourite of his sovereign. Warin Bussel, supposed to have been the son of Roger de Busli, was his successor, and ranks as the first baron of Penwortham. He was a considerable benefactor to the abbey of Evesham, on which he conferred the churches of Penwortham, Meols, and Leyland, and the town of Farington.

A charter dated to the late 12th century records an agreement between the priory of Bullington in Lincolnshire and "Ala[num] filium Swani de Lincolnia" relating to land in the parish of St Bavon, sealed by "Alani filii Svani"[775]. m --- Bussel, daughter of WARIN Bussel & his wife ---. The Testa de Nevill includes an inquisition concerning Lancaster dated 1212 which records that "Ricardus Bussel" granted land "in Gunnolvesmores" to "Alano filio Swani cum sorore sua"[776]. "Ricardus Busel" confirmed the donations made by "pater meus Warinus" to Evesham abbey by charter dated to [1153/60], witnessed by "…Sibilla et Matilde sororibus meis"[777].”
  • “Conteville, Vernon, Redvers” < link > “As I recall, Roger de Busli had a brother Ernald de Busli. The family of Ernald seems to be often called Bussell (aka Busli) and they were in Penwortham, Lancashire at Preston. It’s probably reasonable to think “Ernald” is a name used by the Busli/ Bussell families. At Geni for Warin Bussell there is some mixed up data but, Geni does usually apply a shield to an entry. In this entry, the shield given for Bussell is argent, a chevron between three water bourgets sable (I think they are bourgets). This Bussell or Busli family would seem to also include the co-founder of Roche abbey near Blyth.”
