About Vldknt. Jan Jacobs

  • Jan Jacobs (=9 November 1760) Jan Jacobsz (1760) was the youngest of six children. His father had four children with his first wife, Anna Catharina Posthumus, and two with his second wife, Margaretha Alida van der Trans.
  • Jan’s father was a vryburger in the Cape where, consistent with the historical setting, he was engaged in agriculture, as were most vryburgers at the time.
  • Jan married twice. His first marriage was with Emmerentia Steyn on 16 June 1782. She was from the neighboring Swellendam District where her father was a farmer. Together they had eight children between 1783 and and 1797.
  • On 13 December 1801 Jan married Lea Boshoff who was also from the Swellendam District. They had one son, Willem Hendrik who was born in 1804.
  • Jan spent his entire life in the Stellenbosch and Swellendam Districts of the Cape of Good Hope. He later became Veldkornet in the Outenikwa Ward (between George and Mosselbay), where his second wife's family also lived. Most of his children also moved further afield, first to the eastern parts of the Swellendam District and then to the Graaf Reinette and Cradock Districts. From there many of them became part of the different waves of the Great Trek during which they migrated to Natal, the Orange Free State, the Transvaal, and even as far as Rhodesia and Angola. The Jacobsz family through Jan’s progeny, played a central, and often a leading role, in the history of the modern South Africa.

  • In the Parish registers, Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk, Cape Town, 1695-1976, on occasion of his marriage to Emmarentia Steyn on 16 June 1782, Jan is described as follows:
  • " Jan Jacobsz de jonge van Cabo de Goede Hoop Burger van Stellenbosch".

  • For many years it was incorrectly believed that Jan Jacobsz (1760) was married to Margaretha Johanna le Roux (le Roes) as his second wife. This was in fact incorrect.
  • Margaretha Johanna le Roux was married to Jan Jacobsz (1772), son of Gerard Nicolaas Jacobsz (1751), his nephew. On both their son's christening records, Jan Jacobsz (1772) was named as Jan Jacobsz Gerrits (son of Gerard Nicolaas Jacobsz).
  • Contrary to popular belief, Jan was only married twice and not three times.
