Valentine Hatfield was the son of Ephraim Hatfield and first wife Mary Smith. He was born in 1789 in Virginia. He married Martha Weddington (1789-1867) and had at least four children. He died in May, 1872, in Justice, Mingo County, West Virginia. His place of burial is unknown.
Wall was not his middle name. It was a nickname, some say given for his stubborn personality - moving him was like moving a wall. Others say it was because he was steadfast - you could lean on him like a wall.
He was the grandfather of "Devil Anse" Hatfield, of the Hatfield-McCoy feud.
