About Thomas Potts, Sr.

Thomas Potts, Sr. is Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States 7th great grandfather (relationship path).

Thomas was the son of Richard Pott and Anne Ashe of Derbyshire, Chesterfield, England. He arrived in Burlington (then known as Bridlington), New Jersey with his family aboard the ship "Shield" (which sailed from Hull, England) in 1678. In 1699 the family moved from Burlington to Philadelphia, where Thomas resided until his death. He was a leather tanner by trade and was married three (possibly four) times. No visible headstone.

Thomas Pott traveled to the American colonies aboard the Shield in 1677. He married four times, the third spouse Anne ca. 1701 in Pennsylvania. By his second wife Joan Platts he had children Henry Potts, John Potts and Thomas Potts who all emigrated to the colonies, settling in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1760 Potts familes from that area migrated to North Carolina because of the plague, and settled in Anson, Rowan and Mecklenburg counties. Later, descendants moved on to Tennessee and Kentucky.

"At the age of 31, Thomas and his family sailed on the ship "Shield, landing at Burlington township, in December 1678. His occupation was listed as a tanner. In 1699 he moved to Philadelphia. He was a baptist. Thomas Potts erected the first cold-blast furnace at Pottstown in 1720. Pottstown is 38 miles northwest of Philadelphia on the Schuylkill River. He married three or four times."

The ship “Shield,” Capt. Daniel Towes, from Hull, England, arrived in the Delaware River in December, 1678, and anchored at Burlington, West Jersey colony. Among its passengers were Thomas Potts and his wife, Ann, and children. He died in Germantown in 1726. On Dec. 30, 1680, he purchased in Burlington, N. J., a dwelling, bark-mill, tanyard, etc. In 1692 he bought lands in Philadelphia. He was a tanner by trade. His wife, Ann, died 7th mo. 9, 1714, and in 1716 he married Alice Pusser. The Potts family were Friends. His will was proven Nov. 10, 1726.
