Biography

Thomas was born about 1658 [sic: before]. Thomas King ... He passed away in 1706. [1]

Thomas King and his wife, Mary, arrived in what became named Charles Towne, with the first band of settlers on March 15, 1670.

A fleet of three ships sailed from Gravesend England in August, 1699, destination the New World, to a place described as the Colony of Carolina. After a couple of stops and a few hardships along the way only one out of the three lowered it's anchor off the Carolina coastline.

The ship "Carolina", arrived in See Wee Bay and proceeded to anchor at the north end of Bull's Island on March 15, 1670. (Thomas King and his wife, Mary, his mother Leah King, and a sister who was also named Leah, were passengers on the ship "Carolina"). The first settlers established their settlement at Albemarle Point, which was located on the west bank of the Ashley River (across the river from its current site). They chose to name their settlement Charles Towne, in honor of King Charles, II of England.

By 1672, Charles Towne was reported to consist of thirty (30) houses and some 200-300 settlers. In 1690, Charles Towne was officially moved to its current site on the penunsula. Population in 1690 was estimated to be about 1200.
