Biography

Thomas Briggs, son of Clement Briggs, Sr. and his first wife, Joan Allen, was born on June 14th,1633, Weymouth, Norfolk, Plymouth Colony. He died at Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts, before 1 April 1665, when the inventory of his estate was taken.

He married Ann (birth surname unknown) and they had four known children

  1. Thomas Briggs, Jr., born 29 January 1664 at Taunton; moved to Rhode Island and married Martha
  2. Daniel Briggs, born 29 January 1664; married Lydia
  3. Samuel Briggs, born 1667 at Taunton; m. Mary Hall, daughter of Samuel hall & Elizabeth White; she married 2nd to Benjamin Caswell.
  4. Susannah Briggs, born 14 March 1672 at Dartmouth: m John Cobb

The inventory of Thomas Briggs Senior was dated April 1, 1696. His youngest son Samuel administrated the estate. Land given to sons Thomas, Daniel and Samuel. Left also daughter Susannah, wife of John Cobb.

Clement and Thomas Briggs Land Grant

If not the earliest, Thomas Briggs was nearly the earliest settler in Mansfield territory, his home being in the northeast part. The land grant to Briggs reads as follows:

One hundred and fifty acres of land is granted to Thoma s Briggs, son of Clement Briggs deceased, and twenty acres of meadow, if it may be had in the place desired, which is in the way to Deadum from Taunton, betwixt a pond and a mill river which comes to Taunton, between Taunton and Massapauge Pond.

This grant was dated June 7, 1659.
