Biography:
Susie Sharpfish was born c. 1914 to parents Martin Sharpfish and his wife Mary Good Cloud, both Sioux Indians of the Rosebud Reservation. Susie was one of five siblings.
In her book Vanished in Hiawatha, author Carla Joinson says nothing about Susie other than her name was Susie Fish. A letter dated June 29, 1929, signed by Harry Hummer, advised the BIA that "on June 28, 1929, I received Susie Sharp Fish, an epileptic female from the Rosebud Reservation as a patient in this institution." It is not known how long she was a patient nor when she was discharged but she is NOT identified in the June 30, 1932 female census. Susie would have been only 15 years old at the time of admission.

Research Notes:
-Based on the Canton Asylum female census dated June 30, 1929, the year Susie was committed, her name was Susie Sharp Fish. (Conclusion: Due to consistently lax paperwork this name could be identified as Susie Sharpfish, there was a family on the Rosebud Reservation named Sharpfish and Fish, a source of confusion). Note that in the 1927 census, Susie's mother Mary uses the name Mary Sharpfish
-Susie is NOT identified in the 1932 Canton female census
-Susie Fish wife of James Fish, is identified in the 1942 census as having died 'prior to calendar year 1942".
