Susannah Page Chiles was probably born in New Kent County, Virginia, the daughter of John Chiles and his second wife Ellender/Eleanor Webber. An undocumented profile at FamilySearch states that she was born on 28 Apr 1700 [1] and another undocumented source says that she was christened about 1708 in St.Margaret's Parish, King William County, Virginia. St. Margaret's Parish was not created until 1720.
Susannah Chiles married Joseph Martin about 1730, probably in King William County. [2] He was a recent emigrant from England. A romantic legend says that after their marriage, Joseph was disowned by his English family, but more recent research shows that Joseph did inherit from his father (see profile of Joseph for detail).
In 1744 her husband received a land grant and they moved to Louisa County (later Albemarle County) 8 miles Northwest of Charlottesville, near Earlysville. [3] They owned two farms there, near the Rivanna River.
Susannah and Joseph were the parents of eleven children. [4]
- George Martin b ca 1733 [11]. Married 1) unknown 2) Mary Durrett
- Sarah b ca 1735. Married Thomas Burrus [12]
- Brice Martin b ca 1737 - before 1753. Married 1) Unity Barksdale 2) Rachel Lucas
- William Martin b ca 1738. Married Rachel Dalton.

- Susannah Martin b ca 1744. NOT the wife of Henry Woody.
- Martha Martin, b 20 Jan 1746. Married Pomfret Walter.
- Ann Martin b ca 1751.
- John “Jack” Martin b ca 1752, married Cherokee women, sisters Mary and Susannah Emory. [Note: Emmet Starr incorrectly reported that Joseph was the father of John's children.]
- Olive Martin b ca 1754. Married Ambrose Edwards.
Note: Children’s dates are unconfirmed
Susannah died on 29 Jun 1754 [1] in Louisa County and was buried at the Martin Cemetery (now defunct). [5]
Her widower married secondly to Ann (Pulliam) Sandidge, widow of William Sandidge, who brought her five children to the home.
Research Notes
Susannah's father received two land grants in New Kent County in 1690 and 1691. He was granted 350 acres in King William County in 1722.

Susannah Chiles was also the great granddaughter of Col John Page (1628-1692) of Middle Plantation, Virginia, now the site of Williamsburg. Colonel John Page
Joseph Martin, who married Susannah Chiles, came to Virginia when a young man, married in King William, and later settled in Albemarle. His wife survived him. They had issue : Joseph and ten other children. Gen. Joseph Martin (third son) was a pioneer and patriot, and Martinsville, Va., is named in his honor. ( Va. Hist. Mag., VIII, 347.)
Per: Bobie McAllen states her last name was Chiles. Note: I am a descendant of John Calvin Martin b. 1804 Henry Co., Va. s on of Joseph Martin and Susannah Chiles. John Calvin Martin m. Sophia Rucker. I know he had a half-brother named John who was the son of an Indian maiden, but I have always seen his name listed as just John Martin.

According to many accounts* Joseph Martin came from England on the ship "Brice", married Susannah Chiles in Virginia. They lived in Albemarle County, Virginia and had children, Joseph, George, Brice, William, John "Jack", Martha, Mary, Susannah and possibly Sarah.
Susannah Chiles is from the Walter Chiles of Jamestown lineage. It is said that Joseph was born circa 1704 in England and died January of 1762 in Albemarle Co VA.
Some have claimed that my ancestral line of Isaac Martin ** of Virginia is also from this family, but I've yet to find any proof of this.
