About Susan Sherman

Susan Lawrence was the 12th Great Grandmother of George W. Bush.
Biography
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/117802209/susan-sherman
Susan Lawrence was born about 1548, probably in Essex, England. Susan's father was John Lawrence, later of Dedham, Essex. She married in Moze, Essex, on June 14, 1568, Henry Sherman, a clothier of Dedham. After the marriage, they lived in Dedham. Susan and Henry had nine children who lived past childhood, most likely all born in Dedham. Henry made his will on August 20, 1610 and must have died very soon thereafter. He only mentions one of his two daughters in the will, and omits son Samuel. Susan's will, made on August 31, 1610, does mention her daughters Phebe Fenne and Anne Whighting, giving their married names, and mentions all seven of her sons. She also mentions her "brother", Gilbert Hilles, but he was the widower of her sister. Susan's estate was probated on September 12, 1610, just a few days after she wrote her will. Susan was surely buried in the churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin Church in Dedham.

Birth and Parents
Kay Haden observes that Michael Johnson Wood's research reveals that Susan was certainly Susan Lawrence, probably born say 1548, the daughter of John Lawrence, a minister. The span of births of John Lawrence's children suggest that he probably was twice married but the name of the wives has not been discovered. There was likely also a daughter who married Gilbert Hills.[1]
Susan Lawrence was born about 1548 in England[2]
Susan Lawrence was the daughter of Rev. John Lawrence, born about 1500. [3]
(NB: John Lawrence of Fressingfield Suffolk married FIRST Anne Sammes, sister of Agnes)[10]
[SImon Clarke note]: It would seem very unlikely that Susan Lawrence was the daughter of John Lawrence of Rumburgh, which is a long way from Moze - it has long been the custom for a marriage to be based on the bride's father's house.
Rev. John Lawrence was born about 1500. [4]
John may have married a relative of John Burward of Debach, Suffolk, who in his will of 12 Apr 1572, left lands in three parishes to the preacher's son John. [4]
There seems to be a long interval between the birth of the son John and the other children. Perhaps Rev. John was married more than one time.[4]
The NEHGS Register's series of articles on the Sherman family, also noted the Lawrences. The Rev. John surely had a brother, James, born about 1505, of Dedham. James married Joan Thorpe, widow of William Thorpe who was buried at Dedham 3 Jan 1575/6 and then Barbara, surname unknown, who became guardian of William Thorpe's only granddaughter, Rose Havelocke, in 1576. [11]

Notes
Susan is frequently listed as Susan Renee Lawrance. That comes from a will, where she is listed as "Susan Re nee Lawrance" - meaning that her MAIDEN name was Lawrence - NOT a middle name of Renee...
[Art's note] : Many (mostly older) genealogists say Susan was Susan Hills. Here I defer to President Bush's genealogist and others, who say it was SusanLawrence. Those earlier 19th century genealogists report that Susan Hills made a will in 1610 and was buried Sept. 13, 1610. Her husband,Henry Sherman was buried Aug. 28, 1610. : [Gilly Wood's note]: Wife Susan and brother-in-law Gilbert Hills are named in the Will of Henry Sherman clothier of Dedham dated 31 August1610, proved 12 September 1610. : Gilbert Hills of Moze, Essex was living in August 1610 when he was called brother-in-law and brother respectively, in the Wills of Henry Sherman and his widow Susan. He was the son of Gilbert and Agnes (Sammes) Hills who married Anne Sammes, sister of Agnes. : (NB: John Lawrence of Fressingfield Suffolk married FIRST Anne Sammes, sister of Agnes)<ref>Source: #S6 </ref>
