About Sophia Three Stars
Sophia Three Stars was a Sioux woman of the Sicangu Lakota tribe
(Curator Note: Tiyospaye identifies Sophia as Oglala Sioux, I believe that to be incorrect based on input from a trusted user...
"David,
It is through the mother's line. What your mother was/is, so are you. The only exception is if a band chooses a chief from another band;...Very rare to stray from the mother's band or clan."
This would lead tot he conclusion that Sophia was Sicangu Lakota
The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (Lakota: Wazí Aháŋhaŋ Oyáŋke), also called Pine Ridge Agency, is an Oglala Lakota Indian reservation located in the U.S. state of South Dakota, with a small portion of it extending into Nebraska. Originally included within the territory of the Great Sioux Reservation, Pine Ridge was created by the Act of March 2, 1889, in the southwest corner of South Dakota on the Nebraska border. The reservation encompasses the entirety of Oglala Lakota County and Bennett County, the southern half of Jackson County, and a small section of Sheridan County.

Pine Ridge is the site of several events that mark milestones in the history between the Sioux of the area and the U.S. government, first and foremost the Battle of Wounded Knee also known as the Wounded Knee Massacre, was a massacre of nearly three hundred Lakota people by soldiers of the United States Army. The massacre, part of what the U.S. military called the Pine Ridge Campaign, occurred on December 29, 1890, near Wounded Knee Creek (Lakota: Čhaŋkpé Ópi Wakpála) on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, following a botched attempt to disarm the Lakota camp.
Historian Jeffrey Ostler wrote in 2004, "Wounded Knee was not made up of a series of discrete unconnected events. Instead, from the disarming to the burial of the dead, it consisted of a series of acts held together by an underlying logic of racist domination."

Biography:
Sphia Three Stars (Wicaopi Yamni) was born June 20, 1892 in South Dakota to father Packs the Dog (English: Clarence Three Stars, Oglala Lakota Sioux (Minikowoju Tribe) and who was the States Attorney for Bennett County, and Jennie Dubray of the Sicangu band of Lakota.
Her father and mother met as students at the Caarlisle Insustrial School. Clarence was in the first class to be enrolled in 1879, Jennie later in 1883. They married in 1910.

In her book Vanished in Hiawatha, Carla Joinson states that Sophia Three Stars arrived at the Canton Asylum on august 25, 1922, and was diagnosed with dementia praecox. (Dementia praecox (meaning a "premature dementia" or "precocious madness") is a disused psychiatric diagnosis that originally designated a chronic, deteriorating psychotic disorder characterized by rapid cognitive disintegration, usually beginning in the late teens or early adulthood. Over the years, the term dementia praecox was gradually replaced by the term schizophrenia, which initially had a meaning that included what is today considered the autism spectrum.)
When the Canton Asylum closed, Sophia was transferred on December 22, 1933 to St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington D.C. She was forty years old at the time. Sophia was still a resident in St. Elizabeths Hospital on April 14, 1940 and April 4, 1950. On 1966 a Life Claim was made to the SSA on behalf of Sophia, but the claimant is not named.
If Find a Grave can be believed, but since there are no family members linked this is dubioius, then Sophia was discharged from St. Elizabeths Hospital and returned home to South Dakota sometime between April 4, 1950 and March 22, 1966, where she died and was buried at the Inestimable Gift Cemetery, Allen, Bennett County, South Dakota. She did have siblings or the spouses thereof who could have sponsored her discharge and return.
Her profile is part of the The Canton Asylum One Place Study.
