William Saunders of Banbury, Oxfordshire was the great-grandson of Sir Thomas Cook, a wealthy draper, who was lord mayor of London in 1462-3.
At the time of her marriage to William Cope, Jane Spencer was the widow of William Saunders (died c.1493), by whom she had four daughters,
