WILLIAM CUNNINGHAM Earl of Glencairn

William Cunningham, Ear of Glencairn. On 24 August 1549 he had a charter from his father to himself and his wife of certain lands in the earldom of Glencairn. He was a member of the Privy Council as Master of Glencairn as early as 1569 ; his first appearance on that body as Earl is in November 1575. He was dead before 18 October 1580, when his son James was sworn in as a Privy Councillor under the title of Earl of Glencairn. He married (contract 20 August 1547) Janet Gordon, daughter of Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar. The Scots Peerage IV: pp. 242-3

William Cuninghame, 6th Earl of Glencairn was born in 1535.

He married Janet Gordon, daughter of Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar and Margaret Crichton, on 24 August 1549.[3]

He died from 1576 to 24 February 1579/80.[1]

He was the son of Alexander Cuninghame, 5th Earl of Glencairn and Lady Janet Hamilton.[2]

He succeeded to the title of 6th Earl of Glencairn [S., 1488] on 23 December 1574.[3]

He succeeded to the title of 6th Lord Kilmaurs [S., 1464] on 23 December 1574.[3]

William Cunningham, 6th Earl of Glencairn (after 1530 – circa 1578)

He was the son of Alexander Cunningham, 5th Earl of Glencairn and Janet Hamilton, daughter of James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran. He married sometime before 24 August 1549 to Janet Gordon of Lochinvar (died 18 November 1596). She was the daughter of Sir James Gordon of Lochinvar and Margaret Crichton. They had the following children:[1]

• John Cunningham, Laird of Ross
• Lady Jean Cunningham who married George Haldane of Gleneagles (died 18 October 1574). After his death she married Roger Kirkpatrick of Closeburn.
• Lady Katherine Cunningham who married Robert Fergusson, 9th Laird of Craigdarroch (died about 1613).
• Lady Margaret Cunningham who married Sir Lachlan Mor Maclean of Duart (died 5 August 1598)
• Lady Elizabeth Cunningham who married (1) in 1579 to James Crawford of Auchinames. After his death she married Alexander Cuninghame, 5th Laird of Craigends. Elizabeth died before 7 September 1614.
• Lady Susannah Cunningham who married John Napier of Kilmahew

William died between 1576 and 24 February 1579/80.
