Barons of Stockport

Stockport is considered one of the original 8 baronies created by Hugh Lupus.

Stockport Castle is first mentioned in 1173, in the nineteenth year of Henry II." It was then held by Geoffrey de Constantine, of Hugh Bohun, the 5th Earl of Chester in lineal descent from Hugh Lupus." Baron Geoffrey de Constantine (Galfridi de Costentin) also held lands in Ireland under Hugh de Lacy, Lord of Meath, under Henry II. Geoffrey was married to the sister of Hubert fitz Ralph, a Nottinhamshire Baron and died after 1171 and before 1181. His widow was still alive in 1181. After his death, for unknown reasons, his estate was confiscated to the Crown. This must have coincided with Roger de Stockport becoming Baron of Stockport. This profile says Robert of Stockport was the grandson of Waltheof of Bredbury (part of modern Stockport) who held nearby Bredbury under the Masci family. At the Conquest, Richard de Vernon held the manor at Bredbury, but the manor passed into the Masci family, and was afterward held by the Stockport family. It might be deduced then, that the Stockport family ,may have had some familial relationship with the Masci family.
