• ' Sir John Holles, 1st and last Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne was born on 9 January 1661/62.1 He was the son of Gilbert Holles, 3rd Earl of Clare and Grace Pierrepont.1 He was baptised on 16 January 1661/62 at Edwinstow, Nottinghamshire, England.2 He married Lady Margaret Cavendish, daughter of Henry Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Frances Pierrepont, on 1 March 1689/90.3 He died on 15 July 1711 at age 49 at Welbeck, Nottinghamshire, England, after a fall form his horse while stag hunting, without legitimate male issue.4 He was buried on 9 August 1711 at Westminster Abbey, Westminster, London, England.4 His will (dated 29 August 1707) was probated on 6 July 1715.4
• ' Sir John Holles, 1st and last Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne held the office of Gentleman of the Bedchamber between 1689 and 1691.2 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Middlesex between 1689 and 1692.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Nottinghamshire in 1688/89.2 He succeeded to the title of 4th Earl of Clare, co. Suffolk [E., 1624] on 16 January 1688/89.4 He succeeded to the title of 4th Baron Houghton of Houghton, co. Nottingham [E., 1616] on 16 January 1688/89.4 On 26 July 1691 he inherited the Cavendish estates from his father-in-law, 2nd Duke of Newcastle-on-Tyne, and applied to the King for a Dukedom.2 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire between 1694 and 1711.4 In January 1693/94 he inherited the estates of Denzill Holles, Baron Holles of Ifield, making him one of the largest estate owners in England.2 He was created 1st Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne [England] on 14 May 1694.2 He was created 1st Marquess of Clare [England] on 14 May 1694.2 He was Commissioner of Greenwich Hospital between 1695 and 1711.4 In October 1695 at Welbeck, Nottinghamshire, England, he entertained the King for 5 days, at a cost of £5,042.2 He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) on 30 May 1698.4 He held the office of Keeper of Sherwood Forest between 1699 and 1711.4 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding, Yorkshire between August 1699 and 1711.4 He held the office of High Steward of Dorchester in January 1700/1.4 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of the North Riding, Yorkshire between 1705 and 1711.4 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 29 March 1705.4 He held the office of Lord Privy Seal between 29 March 1705 and 15 July 1711.4 He held the office of Chief Justice in Eyre, North of Trent between September 1710 and July 1711.4 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Middlesex in 1711.2

• 'John Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, KG, PC (9 January 1662 – 15 July 1711) was the son of the 3rd Earl of Clare and his wife Grace Pierrepont. Grace was daughter of The Hon. William Pierrepont and granddaughter of the 1st Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull.

John Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne , KG, PC (9 January 1662 – 15 July 1711) was the son of the 3rd Earl of Clare and his wife Grace Pierrepont. Grace was daughter of The Hon. William Pierrepont and granddaughter of the 1st Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull. The Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne is a title which was created three times in British history. The first creation had become extinct when Henry Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne died with out a male heir. Holles became the 1st Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, of the 2nd creation, in 1694. Holles was born in Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire. On 1 March 1690, he married Lady Margaret Cavendish, a daughter of Henry Cavendish. They had one child, Lady Henrietta Cavendish Holles (1694–1755), who married the 2nd Earl of Oxford and Mortimer and was mother to Margaret Bentinck, Duchess of Portland.
