Richard Moone’s offspring were to claim kinship with the Mohuns of Somerset, but their descent from their alleged progenitor, Sir John Mohun (d.1330) of Dunster, is obscure; the name of Moone’s father is not given in the visitations for Dorset, but he may have been a man living at Ottery St. Mary in 1516.
Mohun of Fleet
In 1606 Garter Dethick compiled for Maximilian Mohun of Fleet, grandson of Richard, one of those great vellum pedigrees, adorned with arms, so characteristic of the period and which modern scholars are accustomed to discount. Garter Dethick was considered one of the most rascally antiquaries of that rascally period, and so would, generally speaking, be entitled to small credit.
This pedigree came into the possession of the antiquary Sir Henry Maxwell Lyte, head of the Public Record Office and the author of the 'History of Dunster." It descended to him as heir general of the Mohuns of Fleet. Sir Henry was of the opinion that it could not be entirely discredited.
According to Dethick the Mohuns of Fleet descended from the Mohuns of Dunster in the following manner:
- 1. Sir John de Mohun, of Dunster, b. circa 1269, died in 1330.
- 2. Sir Robert de Mohun, of Porlock, co. Somerset, jure uxoris, m. Elizabeth Fitz Roger, lady of Porlock
- 3.John de Mohun of Porlock
- 4. ____ Mohun <=== invented?
- 5. John Mone, of Ottery St. Mary, co. Devon
- 6. Richard Moone, of Bridport, from whom the Mohuns of Fleet descended.
BIRTH: John is identified in the parchment pedigree of Maxmillian Mohun, drawn in 1606, cited in G. Andrews Moriarty, "Mohun (Additions andvCorrections," NEHGR, 82(1928):67 (FHL #974 B2ne).
Also see John Hutchins, THE HISTORY AND ANTIQUITIES OF THE COUNTY OF DORSET, 2 vols.(Westminster, 1863) 2:741 (FHL #Q942.33 H2hu). Hutchins indicates John of Ottery St. Mary is the father of Richard. Moriarty suggests that John is the son of Richard Mohun of Ottery St. Mary, citing "Court Rolls of Ottery St. Mary, m. 106d" (Moriarty, "Mohun," 82:67).
DEATH: Died after 14 Apr 1516, when John was surety for William Salter, Court Rolls of Ottery St. Mary, cited in Moriarty "Mohun," NEHGR, 82:67.
