About Sir John Arundell, KB

There is conflicting evidence as to where Sir John Arundell is buried. In the will of Sir John Arundell, dated 12 Dec. 1589, his grandson states “my bodie willingelie I would have buryed nere my grandfather in the higher Saint Columbe within the saide Countie.” There is also a burial record in the St. Columb Major parish register for Sir John Arundell, knight dated 20 Feb 1544/5.

However, in 1631, the antiquarian John Weever, transcribed the following inscription in the church of St Mary Woolnoth, Lombard Street, in the City of London.

Here lieth Sir John Arundell, Knight of the Bath and Knight Banneret, Receivor of the Duchy...Grey daughter to the Lord Marquese Dorset, who died 8 Febr: the 36 of the reigne of King Hen. the 8

It seems that Sir John Arundell was originally buried in St. Columb Major and later moved to St Mary Woolnoth sometime after his grandson made his will.

  • Sir John Arundell (1474-1545) Knight Banneret, of Lanherne, St. Mawgan-in-Pyder, Cornwall, was "the most important man in the county", being Receiver-General of the Duchy of Cornwall.[1] His monumental brass in the church at St Columb Major in Cornwall was described by Dunkin (1882) as "perhaps the most elaborate and interesting brass to be found in Cornwall"[2]
  • He was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Arundell (d.1485), KB, by his wife Katharine Dinham, third daughter of Sir John Dinham, and coheiress to her brother John, Lord Dinham.[3] His sister Elizabeth Arundell was the wife of Giles Daubeney, Baron Daubeney, KG.[4] The senior branch of the ancient Cornish family of Arundell had been seated at Lanherne since the middle of the 13th century.[5] ....
  • Arundell married twice:[12]
  • Firstly to Elizabeth Grey, daughter of Thomas Grey, 1st Marquess of Dorset, by whom he had issue including:
    • Sir John Arundell (c.1500-1557), eldest son and heir, MP for Cornwall in 1554[13]
    • Sir Thomas Arundell (c.1502-1552), of Shaftesbury, Dorset and Wardour Castle, Wiltshire, MP for Dorset 1545 and 1547.[14] He married Margaret Howard, daughter and coheiress of Lord Edmund Howard, and sister of Queen Catherine Howard, fifth wife of King Henry VIII;
    • Elizabeth Arundel, who married Sir Richard Edgecombe;[15][16]
  • Secondly in 1507 to Katherine Grenville, youngest daughter of Sir Thomas Grenville (d.1514) of Stowe in the parish of Kilkhampton in Cornwall, Sheriff of Cornwall in 1481 and 1486.[17] and lord of the manor of Bideford in Devon. He had by Katherine Grenville one daughter:
    • Mary Arundell (d.1557), a courtier, traditionally called "the erudite Mary Arundell"[18] for her supposed work in translating Latin verse, which work has recently been attributed instead to one of her step-daughters.
