Sir James was the fourth son of Sir John Stewart and Margaret Bonkyll, and the ancestor of the Earls of Atholl, Earls of Buchan and Earls of Traquair.

JAMES Stewart of Pearston, son of JOHN Stewart of Bonkyl & his wife Margaret Bonkyl (-killed in battle Halidon Hill 19 Jul 1333). The Liber Pluscardensis names "Jacobus, Johannes et Alanus Stewart, filii nobilis Valteri Stewart et fratres Roberti postea regis" among those killed in battle at Halidon Hill in 1333[1320]. It is not chronologically possible for these three brothers to have been younger half-brothers of the future King Robert II if they were old enough to have fought in 1333.

Sir James Stewart of Pierston or Pearston, fourth son of Sir John Stewart of Bonkill, was the founder and original ancestor of the Lords of Lorn, Innermeath, and Athol. This Sir James received a charter from King Robert I. (Bruce) of the lands of Pierston and Warrickhill, in Baronia de Cuningham. In the deed he is designated " Jacobus Senescalli Filius Quondam Domini Johannis Senescalli, Militis." He was slain at Halidon Hill, 1333. He left issue three sons.

Arms: on his Seal, 1377.-A fess chequy surmounted by a bend charged with three buckles. CREST: A horse´s head. SUPPORTERS: Two lions sejant guardant (Macdonald). His son John had same Arms on his Seal, but with label of three points in chief (Macdonald).
