Sir Frederick McCoy KCMG FRS, was an Irish palaeontologist, zoologist, and museum administrator, active in Australia. He is noted for founding the Botanic Garden of the University of Melbourne in 1856.
It is with great regret that we announce the death of Sir Frederick McCoy, who has been failing in health for the last few months and has been under the care of Dr Maudsley and Mr Rudall. Acting against the advice of his medical attendants, Sir Frederick McCoy persisted in performing his teaching duties at the Melbourne University up till quite recently, and he sat up all one night reading the papers of competitors in the December matriculation examination. The strain proved too much for him and he never completely recovered from it. Until a few weeks ago Sir Frederick was able to sit up in bed, but latterly he was unable to do even that. He died at 20 minutes past 11 o'clock on Saturday night. The approximate cause of death was uraemia. Sir Frederick McCoy was the son of the late Dr. S. McCoy, a physician, of Dublin, and he was born in that city in 1817. Source: The Argus (15 May 1899).
